Rant on tutorial and why it should be improved

(bontsa) #1

We’ve all been there. Being first happy about seeing new, fresh meat joining to perform the cascade of ob-juk-tiivz we have here in the post-apocalyptic London. But in less than 30 seconds your teeth lose 3mm in lenght due to sudden urges to cringe when seeing them failing to grasp even the most simple mechanics. Mechanics, that surely were on the tutorial. Right…? Like, reviving and…supplying ammo…?

I’m sure that devs themselves already know tutorial is, as currently impletented, lacking a great ton of content and specifically ammo / revive part is somehow still hard to grasp. What I am trying here is simply wake up some discussion. How important it should be to have a proper tutorial to prepare new players for this great game without them getting verbally bashed over seemingly simpliest of things.

Good tutorial is not something that tries to tell everything from tips and advanced stuff about the game, obviously not. Players have to find through both trial-and-error and “oh THATS how” moments how to make that specific neat jump on Chapel, or that Stoker’s molotov can be dissipated by explosives. Non. Good tutorial gives you the core gameplay mechanics in simple, but visually effective form. No dummies, but real mercenary models. Experience counter like in-game so there is something to relate to, get that “oh this is what tutorial showed”- moment. Less jargon and bla-bla-bla text, more action and actually showing stuff with the enviroment, interactively. Who remembers what that cracking, monotone, fast talking male voice said in a language that is not my native anyway.

Having properly implemented tutorial would ease the frustration. Specifically the newbies’s. People are not prepared for a rogue-like “smash your head against this brickwall 10.000 times in a row and it might crack eventually” type of experience in shooters, so why should they have it like that. Not saying to dumb down design of the game in any sense, just give them a helping hand with stuff not so obvious of your-average-shooter and they’ll be even less prone to quit forever in order to preserve their sanity. Not only the new players getting verbal bish-bosh against them would get less frustrated, but also of ones who have already learned something of the game. Since they don’t need to attempt to bandage what tutorial has left as an open wound.

It would also be quite neat to, once properly implemented, re-think compulsion of his introduction to the game. Mandatory? Highly rewarding, cases / credits / loadouts? If done right, I wouldn’t personally mind having to play through tutorial as a mandatory thing. Although I am biased of this since I always go through them when launching a game for the first time. People don’t like mandatory stuff I guess. In that case, highly rewarding and hinting towards it with pop-ups etc. is way to go.

I am aware any type of tutorial nor any kind of implementation of it, mandatory or not, would still be unable to save us from the below shown individuals. It will happen. Just need to face it. I would simply hope less often. Must stay in minlvl10 servers if I would just get into one for once or not have all of them empty :<

I saw a bot in a game of stopwatch today, we vote kicked it.

Maybe this is some prototype of a tutorial to come!!

or maybe it was just a complete idiot playing without a mouse.

Either way! INTERESTING TIMES!!!

Another thing, <5 should only be allowed players to play on <5 servers, I saw a guy joining a match with a bunch of >15 guys and he got DESTROYED, then he said that we were “Full Cash” and ragequited.

And this directly affect the game reputation because people are stupid and ignorant.

This is not the guy, is just an example of what happen frequently.

If you see the Negative reviews on Steam, at least 85% says bulls**t. The other 15% have technical issues.

And a lot of people won’t download the game because they only see this:

“73% of 19,845 players recommend this game”

Look at Modern Warfare 2, the game is PAID, and a lot more UNBALANCED, and with a lot more GRINDING involved. And see the reviews.

“90% of 17,739 players recommend this game”

So… yea, the game is great, but if you guys want to get more players, changes will be necessary.

I think that instead of an ammo marker over peoples heads anyone playing an ammo class should be FORCED to listen to this every 30 seconds until they drop ammo.
obviously not if they have a station up

Oh trust me, I sure have too seen my share of these bot like creatures roaming around. I’m starting to think SD should just steal one of them, make it actually proper and polish well and ta-da, we’d have functioning AI to e.g replace kicked player from MM

Don’t worry, be happy and so forth. I tend to create…reaction…in people. And I’m merely high on life

Worst substance ever btw, 100% mortality rate. Don’t do drugs kids.

@ThiagoJaqueta Exactly what I was getting at! And in much shorter form and simplier implementation, thank you. Yes, having lousy first-time experience results in this kind of feedback nowadays. I won’t dwelve deeper into whenever it is good or bad thing games today don’t usually give one the “highfive in the face with a cricket bat” experience they tended in ye olde times, but it just is not popular anymore.

I know it is a thin line between creating pre-chewed content without the joyful moments of finding new and keeping stuff enough challenging for as many involved as possible. But @SplashDamage just has to try or we’ll continue see people hop in and leave right after.

SD should ask Valve the permission to delete such reviews. That’s lying and…character assassination

Yep, bad first-experience = often bad reviews. Time aren’t exactly changing towards more patient route in any way, quite contrary.

So we need properly implemented tutorial as one step of making people enjoy game’s first experience more, and we kinda need it day before yesterday.
