Ranked Season 1 Update - Solo/Duo Queue Updates

(Chris Mullins) #1

The biggest complaint we’ve had over the Open Beta period about our Ranked mode has been from solo players who encounter 5-Player pre-made parties, giving them very little chance of winning. This is in part due to the inherit coordination and tactics advantage gained by 5 friends playing together, and also due to the difficulties of matching a group of 5 against fair opposition in an acceptable amount of time with an fluctuating Ranked playerbase (see Graph B).

When planning Ranked Season 1, we made the decision to split the Ranked Matchmaking into two different pools to prevent these frustrations. These two pools were Solo/Duo and 5-Player Parties only. It’d be the best of both worlds, right?

But then, there’s the fine print… we then analysed the behaviour of the matchmaking population over the past few months, we were able to determine several things:

[ul][li]Solo/Duo made up over 85% of the matchmaking queries (see Graph A)
[/li][li]5-Player Parties made up less than 7% of matchmaking queries
[/li][li]3 and 4-Player Parties made up less than 8% of matchmaking queries combined
[/li][li]The AU and Asia regions did not have enough queueing players for reasonable queue times[/ul]
[/li]

When we factored in the maximum allowed skill difference (this expands over time, so how aggressively the matchmaker is at balancing the teams softens in order to get a match going), along with only allowing 5-Player Parties to match with each other, we found the following:

[ul][li]During peak hours in the EU, a Cobalt Rank 5-Player Team would be looking at average queue times of over 40 mins
[/li][li]During peak hours in the US, a Gold Rank 5-Player Team would be looking at average queue times of over 30 mins[/ul]
[/li]
With this in mind, we decided to remove the 5-Player queue for Ranked Season 1, as finding a game in a decent amount of time would essentially require two teams telling each other when to join the queue… almost as if it were a private match. In the short-term we’re prioritising improving the Private Match feature to help Clans play matches against each other.

We consider organised team play the lifeblood of Dirty Bomb, so this isn’t a decision we’ve come to lightly, nor is it necessarily a wide-ranging indicator of things to come. In the longer term, we are working towards the following:

[ul][li]Reintroducing 5-Player Parties to Ranked with full 5v5 team play as soon as possible
[/li]
[li]This involves working on removing/reducing the worst queue times and also communicating more information to players who are queueing[/ul]
[/li]
[li]Giving friends a method of Partying-up and playing together in Casual games
[/li][ul][li]Due to the much larger population, any sort of waiting time would be much faster in Casual[/ul]
[/li]
[li]Giving players the ability to rent and admin their own community servers
[/li][ul][li]Providing players with more flexibility and also the opportunity to build a community on their own servers[/ul]
[/li]
One of our imperatives for Dirty Bomb is to better support playing with friends and encouraging healthy competition, and we feel that these features will go a long way towards that.

Solo Queue = Waiting Simulator. Waiting since 10+ mins for a match …

Well on the face of it, the changes look excellent - here’s hoping for a much better ranked season (hope my excitement isn’t misplaced!)

Kleppy - mebbe give time for folk to download and install the update?

Yes and no. 3h after the update hit I can assume that some players are already playing MM. Waiting 15+ minutes is way to long

Updating now, I’ll be in queue tonight

So we try ! And 2 of my mates decide to desinstal the game after been put in the same team as totally retarded players trolling and TK us so vote kick after 5 attempt and play 4v5 with 2 other retarded player who don’t undertand anything … and 2 or 3 times ! not just 1. Seriously … This game became so toxic … I’m almost done ready to desinstal DB soon.

I will stay pubbin a bit but I clearly don’t care anymore about this game.
No need for me to be on this forum anymore or the Nexon one. We try to build a community around this game but now we all lost any bit of hope, and we are all ready to move on the Division and OW, we still playing a bit DB pub as a popcorn shooter, nothing more. And without any real content as maps and maps modifications this game will stay barely alive.

Haven’t had a balanced match so far, but duoqueueing found us games pretty quickly.
Solo queue still took more than 5 minutes to find a game during prime time.

It looks like mine and other people arguments from previous topic about solo/duoQ said anything valuable for You so I will try again.

How you want to build a competitive community and “feel” without players to play with. There is nothing funny for being pubstomped 5solo vs. premade. They will not enable premade vs premade because you will wait 2 hours in lobby to find another clan on your skill level/rank.
Give them a time, people need to learn, they need to be ranked or deranked

Right now you have pugs/scrims/cups/ladders where You and your friends should play.

Well just played 4 games, almost back to back, first off queue times was sub 5 min each time - which is absolutely fine.

Game 1 - lost but reasonably balanced, game crashed so didnt count YAY!
Game 2- lost, was slightly unbalanced, until our other decent player quit (shame on you fuzzel). so second half was rubbish.
Game 3 - lost, not a lot in it.
Game 4 - won, pretty comfortable.

No toxic players. No drama. No 5 man premade pub stomp. Learned some stuff from a couple of better players. All good.

Hopefully as the ranks settle down the balance will improve even more.

I was able to give the competitive overhaul a try tonight. After playing a few competitive matches tonight, I’m giving up on the new competitive mode. I had two okay matches where I won one, and lost the other, but everyone was playing objective based and somewhat coordinated.

The other matches I played were horrible. A few afk players for part of the game, players not doing the objective, a fair bit of team killing, no coordination, etc… I have had far better games on min 10 level servers.

^ This is what really differentiated competitive from public matches. It was one of the only ways to quickly get a bunch of friends together and have coordinated objective based play. There are pugs, but often then take longer to setup than the competitive took to queue. Then there are always one or two folks who have to drop after doing a pug.

If you do this, I think you’d have to have special party only servers. Having coordinated based teams in public matches doesn’t make a whole lot of sense.

Why even have solo and duo queuing? Wouldn’t it just be better to make a 5 person requirement for competitive?

This should be a higher priority than fixing competitive. Splash Damage & Nexon have been really great in providing private servers for tournaments and pugs. However, we’re really missing a community aspect where experienced players would frequently hangout at one or two clan servers. This will also make scrims a lot easier for clans.

Renting servers would also give us another mechanism to help $upport SD and Dirty Bomb.

Some suggestions for when you implement this:

  1. [li] Allow us to pick server locations by city instead of by region. Eg. a server in NYC might have a better ping for a team in New England than a server in Miami FL. Both would fall under “US East.”
    [/li]
[li] Add a server description in the server browser.
    [/li]
[li] Add the ability to have a few additional spec slots so players can sit in the server rather than at a loading screen.
    [/li]
[li] Consider releasing server binaries (you could still charge money for them) so we can deploy servers in locations where you might not have existing hosting relationships.
    [/li]
[li] Add the ability to set variables such as maximum allowed ping.
    [/li]
[li] Offer both IPv4 and IPv6 connectivity for server rentals (assuming no binary).
    [/li]

Why were deaths removed from the stats page? Just why? You should be ADDING stuff like total medals earned to the profile page, not removing.
And while we’re at it the stats that you have to mouse-over to see should be brought to daylight like the rest, I bet there are thousands of active players who don’t even know those mouse-over stats exist.

As I exactly said on Facebook :

“It sucks as hell, you can invite only one friend, the interest of playing ranked is to play with a full team. A shame !”

"So add a matchmaking on private matches, for 5v5 teams. ATM the private matches doesn’t work because you have to fill the 2 teams with friends there is no matchmaking ( am I right ?)

And you will not remove this idea from my mind : RANKED is competitive, competitive is better with teams who have the habits to play together. And that’s the best point of this game (like all SD games) the TEAMPLAY.

I add a lot of people to my steam friendlist due to this game, and I started really serious ranked matches on lvl 30.

New players have just to do casual matches and add some people to play with in ranked."

“To conclude, if u wanna ban this game from the E-sport, congrats it’s the good way.”

I think MM is slightly improved but really waiting for the ability to have an OCB server.

agree with that!
Ranked is now a new 5v5 public/casual game…

(Winnie) #15

agree with that too! waiting simulator for a public/casual game

(spookify) #16

I have played 2 Ranked MM’s and both were vary balanced!

(KeMoN) #17

Well, I mean that makes sense to me. The way I understand it is, that everyone has been unranked and therefore the pre-season Cobalts are battling against pre-season Bronze players, since nobody has been properly registered yet. Or did I misunderstand that?
If I understood it correctly, then unbalanced matches are absolutely no surprise and the logical consequence.

Just give it some days until everyone has played their 10+ matches and is registered somewhat properly. I know I won’t be playing ranked for the next 2 weeks until all the Cobalts have their 10+ matches

your rank from previous season should affect the placement matches, but since people were using premades to boost ranks (and conversely, good players were downgraded due to soloqueuing) its not perfect.

(montheponies) #19

Your interest in playing ranked is to do it with a full team, however as per the stats 85% are only playing as solo or duos. So it clearly isn’t the majority of players that are using it with that in mind.

For me there seems to be a problem with folk mixing up ‘competitive’ with ‘competitions’. The former is what ranked play provides as it tries to put reasonably balanced teams together from a random pool (bit like my 5-a-side football game on a Monday night). The latter is what I would equate to organised teams playing with set line ups and strats, bit like amatuer or professional football teams.

How anyone can argue that solos and duo could or should be balanced against premade 5s is just beyond me. The alternative as per the stats is for premades to sit in their own queue for hours waiting for someone to join with 5 players within a reasonable pitch of their skill…would that be better?

Provided SD follow through with server rental, then there shouldnt be any reason why teams cant play. Meanwhile just fallback on the age old IRC, TS, DBN or carrier pigeon to organise your games, from the stats it doesnt look like there should be that many teams to make contact with…

(Szakalot) #20

had two MM games just now 10-12pm, ~8min wait for both games, one game with ~gold players, one game all high/high-

One lost, one won; tight games both of them.

gimme more of that pls; GJ!
