"Ran out of video memory! Exiting..."

(BilbroSwaggins) #1

Hey all,

I’ve been getting this error for a while, and I feel I know why, just not how to fix it.
I have two AMD R9 290x cards in Xfire and still get this “Ran out of video memory! Exiting” error, which is really quite ridiculous with 16GB RAM and 8GB dedicated VRAM.

Through monitoring my PC with MSI Afterburner, I’ve found that my “Pagefile Usage (MB)” skyrockets when in game. As in: my regular at idle/regular usage is about 5000MB, but in Dirty Bomb, the usage jumps to higher than the graph will even show: 10000MB while maxing out at 12206MB.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe that “Pagefile Usage” is when your HDD/SSD is used to store some data which should have been in RAM.

I believe this error is generated whenever there is a memory error, regardless of if it’s VRAM or RAM related. I say this because what I’ve found points to RAM or HDD, not VRAM. (I THINK!)

This leads me to believe:

  1. My RAM has issues and is not performing properly, i.e. not dropping old memory (fast enough?)
    or
  2. Dirty Bomb is not yet optimized for RAM

#2 is almost certainly true due to the beta nature of the game, though I do wonder about #1 being a possibility.

Would anyone be able to tell for sure where this issue is coming from?

Thanks for your time.

What is your OS? Color me curious.

(BilbroSwaggins) #3

Windows 8.1 64bit

Fishing for x86 eh? I wouldn’t have thought that would give a message about video memory though.

I added the 64bit as an edit because I realized that was the point of the question :stuck_out_tongue:

Just wanted to check and be sure. Never hurts to ask, even though you more then meet the min requirements.

(BilbroSwaggins) #7

Any ideas aside from OS which could be causing this error? The Pagefile usage could be an issue stemming from VRAM to RAM to HDD, though I don’t know for sure, of course. MSI Afterburner also shows “Memory” hitting the roof while in game. I assume this to be RAM, but I’m not sure. Could be VRAM too.

All instances of this error message I have read about in the past stem from virtual memory assigned to Dirty Bomb not being high enough(Due to virtual mem limitation from 32 bit OSs). Maybe look down that route?

Here’s an image of what happens when I close Dirty Bomb: http://i.imgur.com/PnNcUyG.png It takes nearly 7000MB just being open. I don’t know if that’s something wrong with the game or if my system is holding onto too much info all the time.

Already tried a reinstall?

(BilbroSwaggins) #11

Reinstall dirty bomb? No, but I verified the cache through Steam. Should a reinstall be the next option?

(Ardez1) #12

I would try that next, because something is definitely wrong if your game is consuming 7gb of memory.

(BilbroSwaggins) #13

I’ll reinstall and hope for the best. Will all my data stay on the cloud? Is it saved on the HDD?

(Ardez1) #14

8MB* Mega. I’ll still reinstall and hope for the best. Will all my data stay on the cloud? Is it saved on the HDD?[/quote]

Your configuration settings are saved to your PC, but your loadouts, credits and purchases are all saved to the Nexon servers.

So I got a pic of what happens when it freezes up on me: http://imgur.com/H3a74f0 Memory usage is pretty high but not like it’s full. I did reinstall and gave the game high priority. Not sure what else to do. Gonna look into driver updates, but that’s all I can think of.

So I realized that the Dirty Bomb program I run is 32 bit. Could this mean that my machine is attempting to overpower the program with 16GB when it can only utilize 4GB? Is there a 64 bit version of the game?

(misspo) #17

Hi, there is no 64bits versions, only 32bits. And DB consuming 7Gb of ram is definitly not normal. You said you reinstalled the game and it change nothing? if it’s the case, does this happen on other game? When you reinstalled your game, did you delet the config folder with all your .ini cfg?

If i was you, i would reformat because some thing is not normal. And you know what? let’s try W10 ? It will not make your cleaning session as useless as it should have been

(Ghosthree3) #18

DB literally can’t use 7GB of ram. It’s a 32bit application and 32bit applications have a maximum of 2GB by default extending up to 4GB in large address space.

just experienced this myself right now. never had any problems before. only after the last patch.
