Rainbow color maps

(shagileo) #1

Hi there fellas.

I’m currently experiencing a rather strange error. When I wanted to light compile my map, it’s pretty huge. The normal meta bsp file is about 0.9 MB, but with a light - faster compile, it’s suddenly 8.8 MB
(knowing that the map is now nothing more than just one room with about 1 light entity, but some light emitting shaders/textures).

Google brought me to interesting places. I learned that the ‘common/lightgrid’ brush could reduce bsp file size. And so I tried.
I created a light grid brush over the part were players could run. BSP compiled and light compiled => now the light compile was also around 0.9 MB (which is normal for the current state of the map).
But when I tested the map, the player model has rainbow colours all over it when scouting through the room (pretty funky, but not effective).

Here’s the deal:

In this case, the player model is completely dark, as if there is no light at all (however there is a light entity with a bright intensity):

Here we have the model Austin Powers style:

This normal? All dark in a room with light entities:

etc.

So basically when running through the room, it’s like you’re walking around on top of a skybox (playermodel covered in rainbox colors).

This is how it looks like in radiant:

(as you can see, the lightgrid brush is just hovering there - details are filtered)

I also came across this website which describes my issue:

But alas, no solution :frowning:
I tried everything - tracemap doesn’t help either
I even tried copy pasting the lightmaps which were generated by the normal light compile (without lightgrid) and pasting them into the lightgrid BSP version.

I will give eternal koekje to those who can save me

Thanks in advance

The lightgrid brush should be covering all areas that players can reach. Atm you created a very thin lightgrid brush high above your map; this is causing the funky colors

Ah, ok - but the grid goes over the parts that players can reach, but it’s indeed prettttttty thin
I’ll give it some extra muscles and take a look if it works

Thanks, it gives me hope

Awesome ! It worked !

The light grid brush is now covering from bottom to top, and not just floating there a bit
You were right Firefly

and this is how it looked earlier (and didn’t work):
