Rahdo's words - what happened here?

(Exedore) #361

I actually don’t know that isn’t the case, I’m not a programmer. It’s been brought up before, and programmers here said it would be a significant undertaking… I suppose I can ask again. Instantly though, it also means supporting the additional keybindings in the options (UI), and the necessary testing.

The first one was more in response to the weapon/equipment bank discussions that have been going on for a while now, it was somewhat related so I included it.

(tokamak) #362

We continually asked for someone playing the game properly with a mouse&KB. We were denied. Just saying.

That’s an important point. SD can’t feign ignorance here, the community has been desperately begging for this kind of footage but it just never happened.

(zenstar) #363

Bethesda handle publicity. They probably got to dictate what footage got shown and since console market is the biggest cash pie they pushed console style videos.

That would be my guess.

(dazman76) #364

Thank you for replying Exedore - I do honestly appreciate it, and feel pretty guilty posting anything in this thread. It is however, a result of my desire to play and enjoy Brink, that I find myself annoyed at it’s faults. So again, thank you for taking the time to put up with us and post replies here  I know it may not seem like it sometimes, but most of us complainers do care and we do want to provide constructive feedback and/or criticism. I tip my hat to your calm and level replies.

Indeed, while I was writing that last post I actually missed the extra UI code thing completely, and you’re entirely right. That makes me sad - because it appears to make the change less likely due to the UI involvement - but I still hope it can be addressed. Even if it’s just the requirement to bind all 3 seperately, with the ability to use the same key for each, I’ll take it. And I think you can count on the fact that it won’t upset PC players, especially if the default initial state is to have the current USE key mapped for each bind:

E - Heal / Buff / Ammo
E - Revive / Comms Hack / Scavenge
E - Interact / Objective

(Yeah, I’m a Half Life junkie, wut’s an F key? :)) This seems like a nice cheap way out - not perfect, but it achieves the desired effect. As you suggest it does require code changes since typical binds will unbind an already bound key, but I’d hope this special case isn’t too much of a nightmare to deal with.
well perhaps you can harass someone who could answer that question :P?
since theres been no information released by you guys or by ATI on when its going to be fixed
its more than likely ATI just does not care
would be nice :D:D!!

We don’t know the power relation between SD and Bethesda. I blame whoever is responsible. Somewhere the opinion of pc gamers wasn’t deemed important enough for to release anything to the community.

(Ashog) #367

I can imagine the power relation is drastically shifted from SD to Bethesda. And this is the REAL cause of all problems with Brink. A person to blame for that is Paul. He knew what he was signing up for, he knew for sure how this would impact the PC player base. So strictly speaking, the direct blame for what we are having around is imho entirely on Paul and whatever top management of SD. Bethesda isn’t to blame much since that is what what the typical publisher behavior is.

As the only disclaimer for Paul I can imagine is that he had to sign such a contract because otherwise SD would seize to exist without money flow (I suspect the ETQW little gains have long been eaten). I only hope he tried to bargain at least some powers/priorities back to SD before signing, otherwise we would have a much worse situation than we do now. I hope he didn’t sign that stuff cold-blooded… I hope it was still hurting but he knew he had to (if you know what I mean).

(Breo) #368

lol verticae can you also analyse the interviews with sd bongoboy

(tokamak) #369

@Brutto1d
Oh I’ll accept that as yet another knot in this cluster****, but it certainly isn’t the only one.

(SockDog) #370

Isn’t the simple answer that there was no PC specific footage because there were no PC controls and such until very near the end of development.

(tokamak) #371

While that seems to be obvious, I’d still want to hear someone admit that.

(FireWorks) #372

Why must this all be about whos to blame. Very destructive approach in my book

(tokamak) #373

They’re the same entity for all I care, they’ve lost me as a fan. It’s obvious that the pc version never was taken serious and never will be taken seriously.

(knippon) #374

Back when there was a comp community, they did do alot of restricting. It did curb alot of the OP problems, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the quick defensive spawn time issues. At one point, my team had a server that had all buffs but ammo and health disabled. Honestly, the time spent on that server was the best time I had before I decided to give up on Brink. The games moved quicker and was a little more offensive. Soon after I discovered that you can actually bunnyhop (really friggin fast too) with a few server side tweaks. (thank you for leaving those cvars editable). Man, I wish I could get my buddies together and play with these settings, but they have all but given up on Brink as well.

What I’m trying to say is that, Brink had great potential to be a competitive game. It still does to this very day. But I’m sad that it might not get recognized. I’m glad SD is making great money, but it breaks my heart that it was at the expense of the very people that supported you back when you were a small time company.

(DrpPlates) #375
If the one key does all feature is here to stay and there will never be an alternative I’ll leave right now because I’ll never play Brink in the long term unless it’s changed, it’s just too frustrating as a PC player being hamstrung in this way.

If they intend to un-bundle the functions currently on that one key I’ll stick around in the hope they address the other issues that are bugging us.
same here- this is my biggest complaint with the game- other issues, i can handle… but not this…

Response:

well, that doesn’t sound good… o well, live and learn… try before i buy another SD game…

(DarkangelUK) #376

The version I played at EGE was on a PC with a 360 controller (I know this 100%), if you look at this thread about getting the 360 controller to work on the PC version, specifically the code for pasting to notepad, if you scroll down it has all of the binds there for adding to the joypad, e.g.

bind “JOY1_1” “_moveup” // A
bind “JOY1_2” “_movedown” // B
bind “JOY1_3” “_consoleContext1” // X
bind “JOY1_4” “_consoleContext2” // Y
bind “JOY1_5” “_sprint” // Left bumper
bind “JOY1_6” “_useGrenade” // Right bumper
bind “JOY1_7” “_selfInteract” // Left stick press
bind “JOY1_8” “_meleeAttack” // Right stick press

The cvars are there, they kinda had to be, therefore could be bound to keys on the keyboard, so I’m not convinced the reason was that the controls didn’t exist.

You aren’t a programmer but also it looks like you aren’t a gamer too.

I challenge you to find anybody playing on PC and which already played W:ET or ET:QW that liked the “one dumbed button for everything” who doesn’t work. Everytime you want to use it, there’s 50% of chance that it does the WRONG action you want (ie: running to the command post even if it’s BEHIND you, healing instead of revive, and so on).

This game is full of frustration. The whole UI is a giant mess, anybody who actually tried to create a fireteam & invite somebody can tells you this.
The gunfight feeling is totally broken (huge spread, very low bullet damage).
The overall graphics are jerky. Not that I care a lot about it, but monochromatic game makes me feel what I’m back on the 60’s with black&white TV.

Now let’s talk about the fun. Well the game isn’t fun anymore after few hours because it’s way too repetitive.
You have the choice to stick to one class & body type only everytime you join a server because you can’t swap body type ingame and you can’t have all class-specified perk inside a single character.
Every single game finishes by a victory from the defending team, unless that the team are totally unbalanced and the attack wins in 2min.
Also, the removal of circle jumping just makes the run from point A to B quite boring since we only have to (toggle)sprint and wait until we reaching our objective.

If the steam stats are showing an average number of player at ~400 where it used to be ~17.5K, plus the review and feedback around the web (not the review from journalist, but players review) makes me feel that I’m right. If the game was only suffering from a lack of competition support, then the average number of players, on PC, would be a lot better imo.

Now back to Rahdo :
-You are saying that you have to trouble playing online on XBOX, well it’s nice to know that at least 8 players around the world are still playing BRINK on XBOX. Maybe they are playing online for 90min because they are so happy to have finally found a round online

-And you are a bit full of contradictions across your posts. See the example below.

Well, you have to bear in mind that character artists who did 90% of the work on customization wouldn’t be able to help much with weapon balance

I WISH we had more money than god in the bank (like Valve) and could just iterate and iterate and polish and polish until everything was perfect, but we don’t.

So all the artists worked for free? Whoa.
You should reason in term of money, I might be wrong but an artist costs a lot more than a single coder. (coder which might have done proper PC controls coding  )

Just because I want to make it clear, this game = FRUSTRATION. I stopped playing it after 60h, which is quite low for a MP-FPS to me. And during this whole time, I haven’t experienced the full game, because all weapons excepted one are useless and you want to get rid of them after 2min, and the body type are way to boring to play if you aren’t a light body type (too slow/unSMARTed/too useless med/heavy body type aren’t fun to play).

Also the whole perk thingy (btw : probably done for the mass and not the competition, since as you said you were expecting the comp to play idiotic lv1 characters who have all to be played the same way because you didn’t unlocked their basic specialisation like turrets for engi in example) is probably one of the most frustrating thing on this game.
Why the hell incapacitated players can shoot you like this? It takes 60bullets to gib somebody, and it can counter kills you so easily, <insert huge f7u12 pics here>.
And when everybody quit playing ESL servers who were balancing the game and making it a little funny, I stopped playing this game, FOREVER.

Who likes playing a game which is badly driving you (idiot button doing everything excepted what I want), which is boring (being on the attacking team = being raped for way tooooooo long), which doesn’t reward personal skill (dumbed weapon) or teamplay skill (sorry I can’t revive you because I just healed a random guy who was passing around here, just wait for another 30s looking at me until I magically poop another revive seringue) and so on?

Next time try aiming at a lower requirement like a good & solid gameplay instead of an expensive extra customization thingy which moreover impacting negatively the gameplay. And I still convinced that you didn’t had enough resources/money to do a beta, and I’m still blaming some features rated as “useless” or optional for this

And now, if you managed to read this whole wallz of spam until here, what’s your reaction about the whole mingleplayer story? (mixed SP/MP).
Many reviewer/players felt cheated about that, do you still think that it should have been done/promoted like that?

:stroggbanana::stroggbanana::stroggbanana:

(Wildkarrde) #378

Thinks Rahdo could have saved alot of typing by just saying sorry about Brink.

(tokamak) #379

That would get a lot less people riled up.

(neks) #380

If we could have a way to manually lock the target of the buff/rez manually and reduce the CP’s area of influence, I’d see that as an improvement although I’m not sure if using a 2-key combo is convenient in-game but in my head, it sounds like a viable workaround.
