Radiant Problem: extreme choppines in editor

(badong) #1

I upgraded from radiant 1.3.12 to 1.3.13 and then 1.4.0, and both later versions become extremely slow with even very simple geometry drawn. Console logging is not on, and I’ve checked the preferences for what could be causing it but everything is fine.

What basically happens is that whenever I get my camera in the 3d view near a brush things become very choppy. Both in the 3D view and 2D views. If I am far away from the objects then everything is fine, but when I move my camera in close then it becomes extremely slow. This happens even with a super simple map such as a plain box. I did not have this problem with the old radiant versions.

Video card is GeForce4 MX 440

(badong) #2

I just updated the nvidia drivers and it made it even slower.

It seems almost as if radiant is not using the hardware acceleration.

(HairyPlums) #3

I have experienced this chopiness myself when I tried to compile maps from inside GtkRadiant (the BSP menu). After the compile, chopiness ensued. I switched to “like a man :)” mode and started using batch files, and the problem vanished. Your mileage may vary.

I’m still using the Detonator drivers (on a Ti4800) as the new ones have RtCW/ET issues - dunno about other Quake engine games tho’…

(SCDS_reyalP) #4

Look in the console output after you start up.
You should see something like

GL_VENDOR: NVIDIA Corporation
GL_RENDERER: GeForce3/AGP/SSE/3DNOW!
GL_VERSION: 1.4.0

If it says “Microsoft corporation” instead, you are in fact in software mode.

You can also use misc|benchmark to compare different versions. It will spin the view around and print a time in the console. I sugest doing this from the start location of the map, so you get comperable results. Be sure your quality and cubic clipping settings are the same too.

If you show a large difference between 1.4.x and the 1.2x, you should submit a bug at
http://zerowing.idsoftware.com/bugzilla/

(badong) #5

yep I’m in software mode. How can I switch this?

(SCDS_reyalP) #6

Do other opengl apps (like ET) work ?

Do you have a multi-monitor system ? If so, try ‘start on primary monitor’

Are you trying to run any other 3d programs at the same time as radiant ?

If you run Netmeeting Remote Desktop sharing, that disables opengl. Turn it off.

If none of the above helps, you can try posting the console output you get when radiant starts up. If you trim all the extranious stuff out of the log before you post it, that is appreciated. ( 100 lines of ‘parsing shader file x’ will not help anyone identify your problem)

(badong) #7

yep other games work fine. 3d max also works fine.

1 monitor only

no just radiant

I don’t have netmeeting installed.

ok here it is.

I think my openGL might be corrupt somehow though that doesn’t make much sense. I’ll install 1.3.12 see if it does anything.

(badong) #8

I installed 1.3.12 and now I get this error when starting it.

glMakeCurrent failed
qgluErrorString: GL_INVALID_OPERATION - The specified operation is not allowed in the current state.
An unrecoverable error has occured.
Would you like to edit Preferences before exiting Radiant?Shutting down GL

(SCDS_reyalP) #9

That is very strange.

Check your desktop color depth. There was a bug where 16 bit desktops would fail, though that should be fixed in 1.4. If it is 16 bits, try 32. It might also fail if you are trying to use extremely high res.

(badong) #10

My desktop was at 16-bit. I switched to 32bit and everything works fine  . 1.3.12 runs without problem. And the 1.4 version uses hardware acceleration. Sweeeet now I can get back to my wonderful brushes.

I’ll admit that I know very little about openGL and graphics in general but it seems to me like these two things would be completely unrelated. There must be a problem somewhere deeper. Something darker hiding in the shadows of Mordor.

Many thanks SCDS_reyalP, you’ve been a real bud.

P.S.
what’s the story behind that name.

(SCDS_reyalP) #11

hmmm, that bug was supposed to be fixed in 1.4. Looks like it might not have been entirely squished.

what’s the story behind that name.

bass ackwards :stuck_out_tongue:
