r_wolffog and r_zfar

Just linking a thread from the etpro forums…

http://bani.anime.net/banimod/forums/viewtopic.php?t=6245

I dont know enough about etpro cvars etc. but is it theoretically possible to override the fogclip distance in a compiled BSP by setting a cvar in etpro?

Apart from the fact that looking at my map with wolffog off makes me want to never map again, i really think this cvar is an utterly stupid idea.

I don’t know why you think this has anything to do with etpro. It doesn’t.

Isn’t r_wolffog a cheat protected one? This can give you a tiny little advantage where you can spot enemies at the border whereas they should be covered in fog.

Ok it is a pb issue, not an etpro one.

Still its a crappy idea.

I m going to try and get around it by using multivolume fog next time.

McNite, as I said in the etpro thread, it’s an admin’s choice to turn of wolffog or not.

2 ct on idea of removing fog:

Consider a mapper an artist. And i m pretty sure all mappers spending lots of time on graphics understand that part of work as art.
Then have a look at what the cvar does to his work when its switched on.

Any mapper doing a decent map did spend time and effort on working on the gameplay of the map. If you put in fog, its for the gameplay too. Removing that is messing with the gameplay as it was intended.
@ deej: I def appreciate your post on etpro forum though :drink:

Having read the threads on xfire that started the idea i must say m deeply impressed by how shitty you can actually argue (wow my fps go from 190 to 217 now that s soooo leet i want the fog removed etc etc.). And how brainless posting is on there… explains why you usually don’t get feedback when u develop a SW map, but afterwards get “its shit” remarks. Really adds a whole packet of nails to the coffin of what I think of comp gaming community.
Conclusion for me: I WAS thinking of doing a decent 6on6 SW map. I m really off and think pubbers are able to enjoy and appreciate custom mapping work a lot more.

When you’re using r_fastsky, you won’t notice the HOM this cvar causes. (Actually, HOM never occurs when r_fastsky is on)

Tweaking is actually allways making the map looke like shit just to get an advantage. It’s as old as the idea of letting users tamper with their display settings. And this is no more then a tweak, but causes the HOM and ‘popup’ effects. As this cvar gives quite an advantage for long range shooters, this has to be serverwide, and it’s sad your level will get ‘raped’ because the admin likes tweaks…

You’re right here. Tending to the needs of the comp community is very hard, ask Ifurita. But we love your maps and Iffy’s so the pub players do enjoy them. Don’t give up!
