Quickie about skyboxes........

(eRRoLfLyNN) #1

Hello again

Just wondering if mapcoordsmins and maxs have to include the skybox that I’ve made following the nibsworld tutorial: http://www.nibsworld.com/rtcw/tutorial_skybox.shtml.

Having some problems with it. Sometimes it just doesn’t work (ie I just see the box which is around my “main” map, other times I get the “hall of mirrors” effect that people have mentioned in other posts.

Another thing that might be related - On the box around my main map I have textured all 6 sides with a sky & on the skybox box (confused?) I have textured all but the bottom side with the same sky texture (sd_railgun).

Cheers for reading.

do you mean the sides of the skybox sometimes disappear? i have this problem with a couple of maps im working on at present. not really sure why but it could be a problem with the coords cos i just chucked it some quick values to get the limbo working

torchy, the sides don’t disappear. just sometimes my normal boxmap is all i see, and other times, when it seems that the skybox terrain is working (can be seen) it is the hall of mirrors type thing. i as just wondering if maybe it was due to the coords i had set.

This is the mirrors effect i am talking about:

Do you have the skybox textures in the right folder of your /textures. I had the same thing happen and it was the result of my forgetting to add that folder to my pk3

Also, do you have the name of the shader for your skybox textures listed in /scripts/shaderlist.txt?

(Davros) #6

ahhh sorry. make sure none of your portal sky area lies on the origin of your map.

“ahhh sorry. make sure none of your portal sky area lies on the origin of your map.”

Can you expound a little bit on this. What do you mean by the origin of the map - the starting point of the spawn area or??

just where 0,0,0 is on the grid, in radiant

Bah I have totally deleted the skybox terrain and the props_skyportal and i’m still getting this mirrors effect, even though i’ve checked the coords etc again. i’ve been working on this map for a while now and never had any problems with the coords before trying to put this bloody skybox terrain in. Bahhhhhhh, wish i’d left it alone now. :banghead:

Ifurita, I didn’t check this, but now I’ve deleted the skybox this should no longer be a problem. Thanks for the reply though.

Now I was just curious - but if your making custom textures just to test on your hard drive and you create a folder in your textures directory for the textures…do you also need to put your shader file in the etmain/scripts directory or in your textures directory where the textures are at, or both or ??

First the link to the tutorial in your first post doesn’t work(at least it wasn’t working for me). Fix that so that we can take a look at the tutorial you used and see if there are any mistakes there.

Starting from your original post:
Max and min coordinates MUST include everything, including your skybox. As a matter of fact they should be 64-128 units “larger” than your actual map.
I’m not sure if I understood your post correctly but it sounds like you have 2 boxes sorrounding your map? And they are both skies?
Just have one box surrounding your map and texture EVERYTHING(meaning all faces of all brushes execpt for the bottom one) with the sky shader.

Now maybe this will sound stupid but where exactly are you getting the HOM effect, because you’re supposed to get it if you’re at the edge of your map.
If you’re getting it in the middle of the map than it’s a diffeent matter, and the only thing i can think of is if you have caulk or nodraw brushes in your terrain and so you can
see through them to the bottom sky.

EDIT: Nvm…ignore my post, apparently I completely missanderstood what you were trying to do

badong, I don’t know why that link won’t work from here, but it works from this google search: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=nibsworld+skybox It’s the first result on the page. I don’t have 2 boxes surrounding my map. I have 1 surrounding my “map”, and another outside it - I am attempting to make a skybox terrain.

Anyway last night, I deleted the skybox terrain and the props_skyportal and messed around with the coords. Finally, in desperation, I changed the texture on the sides of my remaining box and this got rid of the mirrors thing. (These were happening at the edge of my map btw). I had been trying railgun sky just for experiment and it seems to me that this was the main problem. Despite that, the skybox terrain wouldn’t work when i tried to do it again using the battery clouds sky. I know this is confusing because I am saying sky all the time :D. But hopefully you can see the tutorial from the above google link and see what I am trying to do.

Mr Lego, I’ll have a look at your link now.

Thanks again for all the replies![/quote]

I saw Irrelevant’s thread there too http://www.splashdamage.com/index.php?name=pnPHPbb2&file=viewtopic&t=6081, and I’ll have a go at all this stuff tonight when I get home from work.
