Give this a try. Swap out your quick knife to wield knife on “F”. Then make your quick knife “2” if you want. Just press “F” to simply equip your knife. It’s super convenient. Your hand wont have to do any awkward movements and it’s very fluid.

But F is the primary interaction key (plant/defuse, repair, help up, etc.). If anything, I think that 3 is good enough for the knife.

I changed the interaction to “X”.

You don’t have to use a thumb button on your mouse. Any key works that is easy to access. I only used the thumb button as an example because it’s what I use. I also use “A” to select my primary weapon since my pinky finger is always hovering over it (I use ESDF for movement).

The closest you can get to something like this is setting up a macro and, well…setting up macros is a little on the shady side of things.

Oh, you’re that type of player? I’d probably do the same if ESDF didn’t feel weird. Though I guess it makes a bit more sense considering home row is ASDF.

I changed back in the day when I was learning to play Q3. It was rough for a week and then I just got used to it. ESDF is your home row keys so that just makes sense and also it opens up a few more binds to easily use. I can still easily hit tab, caps and shift (never could hit ctrl reliably with wasd or esdf) and with moving over I gained access to more keys I can hit easily with my pinky and I can reach 5 and 6 much easier. Q3 had a lot of guns and you used all of them so having that many easily accessible binds was important that was back before mice came with a ton of buttons. Also, you wouldn’t want to use mouse buttons most of the time to switch weapons as it would throw off aim (especially in mods like CPMA which has instant weapon switching).

The one regret I have is that I wasn’t an old Doom/early Q1 player where most people used spacebar to fire (c and v were common too). It would be nice to not ever press a button on a mouse that could interrupt aim. But I never learned that despite trying. It makes sense though.
