Quick Guide to Redeye

(Dr_Plantboss) #1

Redeye is one of the (currently) 4 recon mercs, and is arguably the most versatile. Here are some ways that you can use him to the best of his abilities.

                                                                            WEAPONS

Redeye has a selection of 3 primaries: the Grandeur SR, the PDP-70, and the Dreiss AR. If you like long-ranged sniping then you should use the PDP, as it is the only primary that Redeye gets that has a scope. The PDP is semi-automatic, but has low damage.
If you like to up in people’s faces, you should use the Dreiss AR. the Dreiss doesn’t have a scope, but has the largest mag size of any of Red’s primaries. This assault rifle is also the most easily spammed, so it’s great for close quarters combat (CQC).
The Grandeur SR is a great balance. It can still snipe like the PDP, but it has very good CQC capabilities as well. It’s a great choice if you aren’t sure about what you want. It’s also Redeye’s default weapon, so you don’t need to worry about getting a loadout card for it right away.

                                                                            ABILITIES

Redeye gets 2 abilities: A smoke grenade, and infrared (IR) goggles. These can be used carelessly, but if used well they can be used to counter multiple mercs.
Be careful when using Redeye’s smoke. Only use you smoke to smother a Stoker’s fire, cover you teammates, or to conceal your own location. Try not to obstruct your team’s line of sight, as they cannot see through the smoke like you.
The IR goggles are a little bit more complicated, and there aren’t as obvious guidelines to using them as with the smoke. This section is mostly my opinion, so feel free to dispute it.
When using the IR goggles, try enabling them for a few seconds, and check around for enemies. If you see one, you can turn them off and shoot at them, or you can try leaving them on if it’s a small or hard to see target. If you spot a Phantom, you should prioritize him, as you are the main counter to him. Another situation where IR is useful is when looking through smoke, whether friendly or enemy.
Turning IR goggles on when in a melee fight can help you know when to swing your weapon, and can be quite useful. Here’s the biggest tip I have for you yet: If a Thunder flashes you, enable your IR goggles. this will enable you to see enemy mercs as black. This also makes you the counter to thunder.

That was fine but the better one is: Have the PDP throw smoke, hide in it and kill people.

That’s what I mean by “use the smoke to conceal your own location.”
And by use the IR goggles “when looking through smoke.”

Tried Redeye out during the free rotation and I’m honestly surprised I don’t see him around more. He’s insanely fun, especially with the Grandeur and I find him to be quite useful for the team, even if I happened to smoke my teammates out every now and then.

Spotting people with the IR Goggles is very simple and will give you lots of points if you’re near the action. Had no idea they worked on Thunders flashes, that’s good to know. Thanks!

To add, Redeye’s smoke is great for covering bomb defusers, ev repairers, or objective deliverers. I usually always do this as asupport for the team, and take out anyone who tries to cross that and get the defuser to the best of my ability. The Grandeur is what I tend to use exclusively so I usually stay closer to the defuser than far away, but it’s longer range certainly helps depending on situation, postioning, or map terrain.

Also if you play Redeye and are colorblind, check out colorblind guide in the guide section of the forums, it will allow you to change the default spotting color from red to whatever you desire. I chose amber/yellow as red is near invisible to me.

Alot of newer players may be intimidated by Red’s playstyle, and I hated using him at first. He eventually became my main, after further use and changing the colors via the guide for spotting. Try all the guns Redeye has, you might find some cater to your playstyle more. I play Red aggressively, and use the Grandeur as an assault weapon and sometimes the Dreiss. I almost never sniper in any game, yet Red is my most proficient merc, so play around with different loadouts and see if you like him better with something different. This of course applies to any merc.

@KnightDemon I play Redeye extremely aggressively, and he is also my merc with the most XP/minute.

I see what you mean. Thanks for your input!

If someone is playing with the PDP-70 they don’t deserve a guide anyways. Goddamn savages they are.
