Questions about SMART *with kickass pictures*

(Mustkunstn1k) #1

Since I just made an account for the SD forums I figured I might as well throw my thread from Brink/Bethesda forums up here. Might get an anwser from a dev… maybe? :stuck_out_tongue:

Now I know this game isn’t totally like Mirror’s Edge (and it probably shouldn’t be), but I have a few questions about the S.M.A.R.T. system and what is exactly possible to do with it.

A. If I press jump while running up a wall do I kick off the wall to the other side? This can be used to reach higher ledges. This move was used many times in Mirror’s Edge (I’m gonna use most examples from that since it had pretty much everything).

B. Is there wall running? Just running at the wall at a certain angle (mine isn’t exactly right in the picture, but whatever) and holding jump (or SMART).

C. Is it possible to crouch while jumping? Again, like Mirror’s Edge: to jump over high obstacles you needed to crouch in air to pull your legs under your belly so you would not trip over things. The Brink devs talked how a skilled player could be even faster with just using the good old buttons instead of SMART. This seems like one of those examples to me. If there is a rail infront of you and you are running towards it and holding down SMART then you are going to vault over it. But that takes time. Skilled player could press jump and hold crouch to tuck his legs under his belly and just get over it much faster. See picture for better explanation.

PS: I know that my drawings are just the best. :shifty: And just in case some don’t understand -> /sarcasm
Also, excuse my bad grammar, English is not my mother tongue.

Good questions. I’m sure I’ve seen wall running and jumping during a wall run. I haven’t seen jumping while running up the wall or tuck jumping (crouching while jumping).

Nice topic
/me waits for response

yeah i don’t really fully understand the limits of SMART yet. If these questions where answered that be a great help.

(mortis) #5

I just like this thread for the HD diagrams!

i know that vertical wallrunning is in there, but i dont know if you can jump off do a 180 spin and grab on to a ledge. As for horizontal wallrunning I think that would be hard to implement. The only shooter that I know of that has a horizontal wallrun is Gunz: the duel. But its in third person and isn’t really as comparable…

Its already been said that all the actions that SMART does can be preformed with jump and crouch, which would make things slightly faster if done correctly.

180!

also the reason the “turn 360 and walk away” xbox joke fails…

(maxtalent) #8

Wow i just failed so hard. Oops.

Mustkunstn1k, kickass pictures. Welcome to the forum. I hope you will get some reply to your good questions.

Senethro - Yeah. In Brink (Bethesda) forum some people at first thought there is no wall running, but it turns out it shows in a video that there is.

maxtalent - About kicking of the wall for vertical wall running… Here’s how I imagined it, you would just hold down SMART until you were like few feet up in the air and then press SMART / Jump quickly and the character would automatically kick off while turning the other way (180*)

Shiv, mortis, Loffy - Thanks.

I think you’re putting WAY too much emphasis and thought into the smart system…Brink is not a parkour simulator, and SMART isn’t even really about parkour per se, but about smoothing out movement overall, regardless if it involves parkour moves or not. An example would be sliding to break your fall - totally impractical for parkour, but works well in the game.

A) Yep. Totally doable. But requires some skill - it’s not an “out of the box” move. You have to practice it to get it right.

B) Instead of wall running, we do wall hops (as seen in the Freedom of Movement video on the Brink website). Any free runner/traceur will tell you that only the first steps in a wall run are actually useful .The rest are just for show (unless you’re running around a concave surface). Wall hops basically feel like a double jump, but you have to be next to a wall to use them.

C) No air crouching, but the vaulting and mantling take care of most of the cases you’d need air crouching. Plus, the lower the ledge is relative to your body, the faster it will be, so in effect, you get the same speed benefit in pre-jumping a vault. i.e. in the examples you give, you’d always do a vault, but when you do anything to hit the vault higher, you’ll decrease the duration of the vault move.

Hopefully, we’ve got you covered!

I have seen wallrunning in a video, the movement video in container city has it if you pay attention. can’t be bothered to find a link

(tokamak) #15

It’s the video about the shipyard.

Mustkunstn1k, they are kickass idd, where can I order prints?

Wallrunning…hmmm. I quess that’s nice.
I recon, like Horse said, that the emphasis is not on parkour and tricks.
At least I hope not. It’s an FPS, not a circus.

(Mustkunstn1k) #17

Bezzy - Thank you for the response. So how many wall hops can we actually do anyway? Can we just keep going and going (with skill :P) or does the character eventually start dropping?

Senyin - I’m currently in talks with PrintPlace.com. You will be one of the first who will be informed.

Nice drawings, also Estonia is a cool country.

I thought you just kept the smart button mashed down and looked where you wanted to go
