Questions about performance...

(Sorotia) #1

I’m not really a new player but I had some questions about performance and wondering if setting or equipment may be affecting me negatively.

First off equipment…I have a very cheap laser corded mouse, which seems to be dying on me…but only noticeable when I click to fire and sometimes it just doesn’t register and then I’m dead. I’ve noticed time and time again when I’m in a firefight with someone…perhaps even the same character and same weapons and we both are pegging each other with bullets I usually am on the losing end.

Is it possible that my mouse is not registering 100% and I’m not firing all the shots I should be and I just don’t notice it because I’m focusing more on my target than my bullet spray?

Also using a cheap keyboard as well but I don’t think I’ve had much problem with it.

My other question is about settings…now I have a decent computer so I play with the setting high…not on max but high…I’ve noticed in youtube videos some good players have their setting low…don’t know if it’s because of their comp or if it can affect performance that much and could be part of the problem I’m having.

Or is it possible I just flat out suck at shooters and should uninstall immediately?

(I wasn’t sure where to put this but after a little of thinking I thought to put it here because if people can answer me and new players can see this it may help them as well.)

Hello there, hopefully I can help you a little, so I’ll talk you through what you have said.

Your peripherals (such as mouse and keyboard) will likely effect you most is how responsive your actual keyboard and mouse is. If you mouse and keyboard are on the cheaper side, it may mean that the mouse tracking and key-strokes are registered a little slower or less precise than perhaps some more expensive hardware would - however, I wouldn’t say this will affect you TOO much as an average player.

If you are on the losing end of fire-fights, try accessing how you play. - Are you tracking the opponent well with the crosshair? Are you aiming down sights? Are you controlling your recoil? - All these things will link to how accurate you are. It could be possible that your mouse is dying if unresponsive and I would advise looking into getting a new one, because if the laser tracking is off or slow, this will really hinder your play. :c

Now, as for your PC performance. If you are happy with the frame-rate you are getting with the video settings you are working with, then you should stick with that! Some people play on low video settings or custom config because it does two things:

  1. Increases their maximum FPS (for the smoothest experience possible).
  2. Allows them to see opponents easier (less distracting environment details).

Now, again, for the average player this really doesn’t matter too much. Honestly, play with what you prefer and not what others say - because at the end of the day, it’s YOU playing, and YOUR experience.

However, I would most certainly recommend looking into some slightly better peripherals if you feel they aren’t too great!

Hope this helps <3 Feel free to ask me any further questions by tagging @Faraleth if you need anything else ^.^

Well I’m not the best tracker…especially fighting a Proxy or Aura who seems like they’re on coke and jumping all over the place.

But in the case I’m talking about…a good example is Skyhammer vs Skyhammer fights…I’ve always used the M4A1…all of the good loadout cards I’ve ever gotten for him were with it…fighting other with the M4 or the Timik…it’s like they charge me head on and I’m going right for their body and they just mow me down…as far as I can tell they aren’t scoring a lot of headshots…I know the headshot icon rarely shows up when I’m shot down in a straight out 1v1 vs them.

It feels like I have a faulty gun or like they have some kind of hack that improves their damage (Note: I’m not accusing them of cheating it just feels like that when in a 1v1 vs the same merc when I get taken down so quickly and it isn’t even head shots.)

About tracking and such…I’ve read a little about sensitivity…but it’s like I cant seem to find a sweet spot…it’s either not sensitive enough where it feels like I’m dragging or to sensitive and it’s like I’m moving to fast.

Also doesn’t help I have some days where I can do actually really good and other days I get decimated.

I’m just trying to figure out how to be decent…I don’t need to be 40 kills to half a dozen deaths good…but I want to be better but just doesn’t seem like I’m having a lot of luck actually getting there.

About the sensitivity topic.

First of all you should definitely disable all mouse acceleration by doing so in the windows settings.
Afterwards use the mouse fix. You can find it on google, the first result.
This is probably not needed.
Also, if the company your mouse is from has Software, be sure to check it out for more acceleration.
Acceleration is bad for almost every player.
While there are some people who prefer it, the chance you’ll find it useful is very slim.
With mouse acceleration on, it’s not possible to build up any real muscle memory.

Now. You want to find your sensitivity.
I know there are some videos that explain how you calculate it.
I personally found out my sensitivity by simply playing.
You’ll want to check:
Do you use a mouse pad?
How big is it?
How big is the surface you are moving your mouse on (no mouse pad)?

For example, I have a normal sized mouse pad. Not big, not small.
I first tried 5. That was too slow. Then I tried 7. That was a bit too fast. So I chose 6.
Choose one sensitivity (you’ll probably want to start with low) and stick with it.
If you feel like you aren’t able to react fast enough to multiply enemies, turn it up.
I know it’s difficult to find it, but once you got it you can finally practice with it.

Also, I’m pretty sure that the headshot icon only shows up if the last shot was a headshot one.
That means that if your enemy shoots all his bullets in your head but the last one (because of recoil or other situational things) the icon will not show up upon death.

While headshots are very rewarding, the problem is that it’s harder to hit than the body.
It should definitely be practiced though, as the extra damage is important.

That said if you feel like your enemy kills you a lot faster than you, he is probably going for your head.
In this case you need to throw in some crouches besides the normal strafing.
It’ll make your enemy harder to hit you as the position of your head changes the whole time.

Oh, and one last thing.
If you feel like you are playing really bad, do a short break.
Watch some videos, play a different game…
You’ll be able to come back relaxed and fresh.
It does not make any sense to continue playing while it just demotivates you.

I hope this helped!

I have an absolute beast of a PC. But I play using an FPS config because I want to make sure I am always way above 144fps to take advantage of my monitor and it keeps the game extremely smooth. I much prefer smooth gameplay over maximum graphics when it comes to competitive online games. I’d rather not get frame drops randomly and and I don’t mind my game looking more bland as opposed to looking pretty and potentially lose. It doesn’t look awful at all compared to how I used to play Q3.

If I am playing a single player game I go with the maximum settings possible (assuming I can keep 60fps). But multiplayer is a whole other beast and I’d rather win than have pretty shadows, motion blur or depth of field.

@Kirays

Thanks…I’ll try that stuff…to answer your question about mouse area…I don’t use a pad and I don’t have a ton of space but I’ve never liked bumped into my keyboard or anything if that helps.

I turned off acceleration and I’m looking into the mouse fix now.

@Amerika

thanks, I’ll try setting my setting lower…you’re one of the people I had in mind when I made that post lol…watched several of your videos

So…I tried a game…I turn a corner and I’m head shot…gee that name looked familiar…it was you Amerika >.>

Haha, who were you @cherryOctagon? I’ve put in a lot of time today since I hadn’t played in the last few days and ran into a few people. Also, I can give you my FPS config if you think you want to try it out.

Oh I’m Sorotia…I was playing Aura…thought maybe if I could do decent with the Shotgun I could be decent with almost anything…failed miserably lol.

I don’t know…part of me thinks that maybe shooters aren’t for me…but before I quit I’m gonna try and dig up a new keyboard and more importantly a new mouse…when I said mine is cheap I mean CHEAP. It’s a freebie my brother gave me…he works on computers and such and has tons of cheap stuff sitting around.

Ahh, yes I remember. And I am a strong proponent for treating yourself with good input equipment when it comes to playing video games. They don’t have to be super expensive or anything but a well reviewed mouse and keyboard that has the features you want goes a long way in regards to my personal enjoyment in a game.

Don’t give up and keep getting experience and you’ll be totally fine. That’s part of the fun after all
