question for the devs

So I have been really excited for Brink for almost a year now since I heard about it, and as the release date gets closer my anticipation grows. However I have one worry for this game. It seems like Splash Damage really cares about the quality of their game so it forces me to ask. Why would you not have dedicated servers on all platforms? Lag is something that can kill a game just as quickly as bad gameplay, and in numerous videos you guys state that you want your players to have as much fun as possible. So why no ded servers for all? Will there eventually be ded servers say in a patch? (i dont know if that is even possible). Myself and others that I know have been wondering this for a while so any kind of explanation would be very much appreciated

Its more an issue with the way XBL and PSN are designed. Games in the past have tried to incorperate ded servers, such as Section 8. And it became a battle with Microsoft to allow them to do it more than anything.

These complains are better aimed at console companies than game companies.

This article explains all of the hoops that the devs of Section 8 had to jump through to provide ded servers.

ok cool thanks

but than how do so many other games get ded servers… i mean homefront got ded servers and that game was a joke lol

How can you ask a small company like SD to offer up the manpower to provide you with dedicated servers? If the game is coded properly and all those kinks are worked out it will be fine. An xbox arcade game breach has TERRIBLE lag issues not because of no dedicated servers but because the coding is sloppy. I’m sure splash damage is already on it as they have been meticulous with every other little detail up til now.

Other games get ded servers because they have HUGE companies to back them up. BC2 has ded servers and they constantly lose people’s stats and have all kinds of issues. So ded servers aren’t always a positive.

Edit: At least not COMPANY controlled ded servers

Just to put it out there, dedicated servers on PC vs console, are 2 different beasts.

PC dedis consist of the actual playerbase renting servers and running things on their own, which makes for many, many more servers to choose from, and they are able to be modded as well.

Console dedis are usually company run, supplied by the developer/publisher of the game, which makes things much more restrictive.

Wouldn’t company run dedis also mean that when the company decides the game is no longer lucrative that they shut the multiplayer down? I’m reminded of Hellgate: London that shut down its servers rather quickly after release due to lack of success, my friends were really dissapointed because they said it was a fun game other than lack of popularity.

yep, same thing with APB, shut down after 10 days

Of course the ideal solution is to allow PC/Linux servers to be configured as console servers. That way console gamers could rent and use their own dedicated servers too. Of course you’d have to get passed all the BS restrictions put in place to stop console gamers having any kind of freedom to do this.

(SUK_A_FACE) #11

the biggest problem we console gamers come into contact with when there are not ded servers is that it is really easy for people to perform hacks and lag switch when it is a peer to peer server. which if not handled swiftly can very quickly corrupt a game and ruin it

(Jess Alon) #12

Can you explain to me how you think a dedicated server works?

(SUK_A_FACE) #13

i would imagine that for console it is instead of the game picking a host that is in the room, everyone that joins connects to the dedicated servers instead.

To be fair, the issues with BC2 are because of the stat tracking, and that system got completely and utterly swamped when Vietnam released. (They have one master stat server for each platform, I believe.) The PC stats are still not recovered from December.
