Question for Nexon: for how long are full rights signed?

I mean, for how long we have to play under strict rules of this game? ( no custom maps, no own game servers etc) Because in the future I would like to see this game as open source. The potential in DB is massive. It just need to be released. This game is a masterpiece. I dont want to see it dead, shut down when no it will not generate appropriate income for business needs. Or… release it as AAA title for 49.99 with all mercs enabled and no content/servers restriction in the future?

Custom maps are unlikely, but according to @Ardez could be implemented if SDK will be released.
Player-hosted servers prbbably never gonna happen, according to @Faraleth

Although this will make the game bigger (see Counter-Strike and almost all Valve games) an SDK could lead to people abusing it.

I am also not a fan if people take the executive power on servers I play on. Admin abuse is a standard thing on servers in Battlefield or Counter-Strike.

I’d rather just see what Splash Damage continue to do with it. Not everything has to be a community effort.

I don’t mind not having a full SDK. I just want a map SDK so that the community can develop and submit maps for use in the game. Many of the best maps ever created in all games were not created by the original developers. It’s almost a crime not to tap into the creativity and resourcefulness of the mapping community. Especially when you’re looking to keep content flowing into your F2P game.

Another thing I would like to see is for SD/Nexon to either go all in or back off on their server stance in regards to letting the community have them. The reason is simple and mostly revolves around the competitive community. DB is an extremely healthy F2P game (190,000-250,000 unique players consistently in two week spans) but despite the large player base the competitive community is stagnating. This can be resolved in two ways.

  1. Let the community rent servers from Nexon and allow them to do with them what they wish. Turn off stat-tracking/credit gain if needed to avoid abuse or severely limit gains. This would help foster a much bigger and more home grown community which is almost always the backbone of a good competitive community.

  2. Go the Riot route. Start creating, advertising and fully backing proper leagues and tournaments in seasons. It doesn’t have to be a ton of money and the level of effort isn’t even that high for a completely online league and tournament. This too would be pretty good for the competitive community overall IMO.

Right now we have super restricted servers that offer no way to build a home grown community but at the same time that same community is being relied on to build the competitive community. That’s just not how things work today.

I think the game is currently fine as is but a few changes could go a long way.
