Question about the game

(sharpSpace) #1

I understand that the game is mainly cpu dependant and stuff but is there a whole lot they can do about the performance with the engine they use. I know a fair amount about things with computers but I’m not familar with the game engines and how they work/help. Is this performance an issue that dirty bomb may always have. Just a general question about the game. would there be an issue if another engine was used. what engine do you think the game should use in your opinion?

Note. I put this discussion here because it’s more directed towards dirty bomb engine but it’s not a technical issue that i myself have.

Dirty Bomb runs on a version of Unreal Engine 3. While its starting to get a bit dated (with UE4 around). It is still a very capable Engine and in my experience one of the best engines when it comes to scaling with hardware (just going by how well it runs on the garbage me and my friends call PCs).
IMO the engine is more than enough for Dirty Bomb, in its current state. Switching to something else wouldn’t make sense now (too time intensive).
If time and money wasn’t a concern switching over to UE4 might be a option, but I doubt that it would bring that much performance over UE3. Only newer render technics and FX but some of them can be and infact are already added in DB (PBR Materials for example, atleast it looks like highquality material is just that).

That said there is still room for optimization I’d say. Tho it has gotten better over the last couple patches I noticed.

Things are slowly getting better but switching engine now isnt really an option. If you are looking to improve how well your game runs i would reccomend checking out this guide http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=454700366
Very useful for increasing fps
