Question about Missing Textures

(shdizzy) #1

I created a map using several textures from custom maps. But I realized I didn’t want to have to ask permission to use any of them or trace back their paths so I reinstalled a clean version of ET and ran radiant and replaced all the textures that aren’t recognized from a clean ET. But I have several hidden faces of brushes (inside walls or otherwise) that are “shader not found” because this radiant can’t find the ‘old’ custom textures that I once had there. My question is: Is there a function remove all of these ‘faulty’ texture faces from the map and replace them with no texture or just caulking? More importantly, does it really matter if these are there? Based on intuition, I would think so, and I just really don’t want them there. Anyway, thanks. Any input appreciated.

Another quick question: If I make custom textures out of artwork (e.g DaVinci), is that ‘allowed’ or do I need express permission to use any image not from the original radiant texture set?

Making custom textures out of artwork is allowed if there is no copyright on it. For example, the works of Leonardo Da Vinci aren’t copyrighted seeing how he can’t claim ownership of it anymore, wheres Picasso’s works are still copyrighted because he is dead for less than 70 years (this sentence doesn’t feel right).

As for missing textures at hidden faces, you might want to replace them all with caulk texture for fault safe.

Why do you have faces textured which you will never see anyway? This will cause the engine to draw much more faces during the game, resulting in less FPS.

Instead, texture all these faces with ‘caulk’. This texture will not draw a face ingame, meaning the engine has less work to do, meaning you will get more FPS.

Afaik there is no function to remove all textures that couldn’t be found. You’ll have to do it manually I’m afraid.

there is a find/replace under the textures menu, in 1.4.0. so just replace ye olde shaders with caulk.

Anything from before mickey mouse should be fine to use freely and without worry, as Mickey started all copyrights in 1930’s. Or if you really really want to use a “particular” image, just alter it enough so the author can’t bitch too much, or sue. lol. this is still a free game after all.

heh, true. I was getting a huge headache manually finding each brush face that had a ‘shader not found’ until I discovered the find/replace textures feature which is a real godsend. I know some of you mentioned it here actually. I just typed in the paths for the missing custom textures (which I looked up in the loading console) in ‘find’ and put the caulk path in ‘replace’ for all of these textures. Then I refreshed the shaders and they were all gone.

As for caulking, I agree that I should make all my brushes out of caulk first and then texture the sides that will be visible, but I already made the map and it’s not that big so I don’t think I’ll have to worry about how that will affect fps. But it’s a definitely a good rule of thumb.

As for paintings, my map has a little gallery, and I put in some Giger artwork, but I may end up replacing this with classical art, just to be safe. Can someone really sue you for using an image in something not designed for a profit ?
