I want to get the best frames possible but hate how my guns look when using a minimal config.
Is there someway to change only the environment but keep the high graphics of the weapons?
Question about graphical settings
You can make the gun texture guality higher like this.
-
Go to
“C:\Users\UserName\Documents\My Games\UnrealEngine3\ShooterGame\Config” -
Open the file “ShooterEngine.ini” in a simple text editor. If you want to do these things more often, I recommend notepad++.
-
Search and find “TEXTUREGROUP_Weapon” in the document.
TEXTUREGROUP_Weapon=(MinLODSize=256,MaxLODSize=1024,LODBias=0,MinMagFilter=Aniso,MipFilter=Point,MipGenSettings=TMGS_SimpleAverage)
TEXTUREGROUP_WeaponNormalMap=(MinLODSize=256,MaxLODSize=2048,LODBias=0,MinMagFilter=Aniso,MipFilter=Point,MipGenSettings=TMGS_SimpleAverage)
TEXTUREGROUP_WeaponSpecular=(MinLODSize=256,MaxLODSize=1024,LODBias=0,MinMagFilter=Aniso,MipFilter=Point,MipGenSettings=TMGS_SimpleAverage)
These are the three texture groups for the weapons.
The important values are Min- and MaxLODSize, they define which resolution the textures will have for rendering. The engine scales down the textures for objects further away and these settings control which size they will have.
The settings above are for high textures as the game defines them.
I assume your config uses lower values. Lowering the MinLODSize below 256 does not change anything as the game will not accept lower than 256 to prevent unfair advantages.
So, most likely you only need to double the MaxLODSize to the value you want, for example the values above. Using higher values than the ones above should not result in any changes either.

but sadly if you want to have your cobalt shiny you’ll have to use high quality materials. and those decrease frames A LOT
Also it was nice playing with you even though the game was very unbalanced !
I recently went through my config to try and make the guns look better and I ended up changing those same values listed in @moon_moon’s post (I didn’t know/find the guide you’re talking about though). Pretty much nothing changed for me regardless of the values I input for texture quality and assumed the look would only change if I enabled another feature. Apparently that is high quality materials. Oh well.
There should be an option to apply HQ materials only to weapons and not the environment.

I need to correct myself there. The impact might not be that much anymore, at least not with my current cfg (here) and graphic driver settings (back to default setting of 3 after reducing how many frames the CPU is allowed to prepare in advance). So, people should just try it as it makes using silver+ cards.
I assume the bottleneck for most people is the CPU rather than the GPU. You can easily test that via entering “STATS UNIT” into the console (press Pos1 on keyboard). Look at it during a match while you run around and fire and move the mouse. If game frame is higher than draw and gpu, then your CPU is limiting your framerate and your GPU is not working all the time.
For my hardware, my cfg currently creates a good balance between game frame and draw/gpu time. In ranked matches, it can be even and with 16 players the CPU is the limiting factor. But it requires you to have a graphics card that has enough VRAM as I disabled the texture unloading within the texture_groups via “,NumStreamedMips=0”. That should reduce stuttering caused by texture streaming, too.
Btw, if you dislike the texture quality changes over time (I find it very distracting), you need to set minLOD and maxLOD to the same value. If you use “NumStreamedMips=0”, then this should reduce the VRAM usage, too.
@Ahli I am pretty sure my cpu isn’t the limiting factor, since my gpu is terrible. I’ll make sure to check anyways.
@moon_moon Ok so I am confused.
I am using outc1der’s config (Since I heard it is the lowest there can be) and I want the guns to be at the best quality (Shiny and good looking). What to do?
EDIT: doesn’t matter. I got it. Thanks
EDIT2: Scratch that. There is a problem. The gun turns black indoors and sometimes even outdoors. It is easily noticed on crotzni and blish but less on selbstast (Or however the hell you pronounce it). It seems something to do with reflections maybe but I ain’t sure.
EDIT3 (I know, a lot of edits): Fixed it. Vsync was on for some reason and fucked up everything.
@steelMailbox Don’t your menus get extremely laggy with that config. Because i used it but the menus just dont wanna work
Weird, i have a problem where the in-game lobby is laggy without a config, and with the config every menu goes crazy.
@moon_moon OK I have a pastebin of my config so try this and see if it works good for you everything is set to lowest however:

Do you have a Gsync of Freesync monitor? Pretty much everyone I know who has one of those has issues with laggy menus.

Any way to fix it? Because my menus are so laggy

@RyePanda
Run in game in Frameless Window mode . It might reduce your overall in-game framerate by 5 or 6 . But menu should be smoother and responsive.

Are you using one of those monitors? I know you can turn off Gsync and fix it but that’s hardly a solution since you’d obviously want it on for gameplay. The issue stems from the menus being designed with certain frame rates in mind. When Gsync/freesync lock your FPS it messes with the menus that were designed like this.
I believe SD finally got a gsync monitor in house so they can test out issues that might steam from Gsync/freesync but I have no clue on their status of when/if they will fix any of these issues.
I’m not sure if people who do not have one of those monitors also have the problem. They might if they are forcing vsync through their nvidia or amd software.
