Question About Customization Purchases

(Grumpy) #1

Hello,

I’ll start by saying that I don’t have Brink. I’m thinking about buying it for Xbox, but I want to know more about the rank up system, how buying and using abilities works, and about the matchmaking works.

I’ve heard that you buy abilities with rank up points, and I’ve heard things that you de-rank when you reset abilities or something along those lines. I’ve also heard that matchmaking will only match you with people whose levels are equal or greater than yours. Does that hurt matchmaking, like not being able to find matches. Are there enough people playing that you can consistently play with other humans? Is there a lot of lag? Do I have any more questions?

I’m not asking for answers to all of these questions, but it would be much appreciated if you could inform me about the game. There isn’t much that documents the gameplay on the web.

Thanks,
Grumpy :stroggtapir:

Well the most important question is: PC, Xbox 360 or Playstation 3?

With the PC version, there isn’t much of a matchmaking system. Unless you play cooperatively (which is 8 humans vs 8 bots, max). Standard multiplayer (8 humans vs 8 humans, max) works with a server browser. Unfortunately, the server browser is incapable of telling the user whether a server has bots enabled or not.

And yeah, you’re pretty spot-on regarding the purchase of abilities.

Derp. I play on Xbox. Should’ve put that in the main post from the start.

Oh, and how many different characters can you create? I’d like one for each class, and maybe a hybrid or something.

There are currently 20 levels. As you level up you gain Level Experience Points to use to purchase abilities. There are 4 Classes and a Universal set of abilities. You get so many points per level to apply to each of these 5 categories, Universal Abilites, Medic, Operative, Engineer, and Soldier. You can sell all of your abilities at any point, but you lose a level by doing so. Then you can redistribute your ability points. (Respec)

You have several matchmaking options: Campaign (Easy, Normal, Hard, and Versus). Campaign takes you through missions in order for each faction(Security or Resistance) but you can play them in any order. Campaign is against bots unless you choose Versus which will be against humans and count for the campaign achievements.

Then there is Freeplay: Objective Mode or Stopwatch. (This is the multiplayer portion, although Campaign is very similar to Multiplayer. Main difference is that the A.I. for the bots is adjusted in Campaign)

Freeplay (Multiplayer)

Objective

[ul]
[li]Standard and Advanced(8 vs 8 *Bots. Voice Chat(VOIP) is set to off friendly fire is off and max is 8 players total. So you are facing some bots. Example it could be 4 players on each team with 4 bots on each player’s team)[/li][/ul]

[ul]
[li]Big Team (VOIP is on) friendly fire off. no max humans so it can be 16 humans squaring off, 8 on each team. [/li][/ul]

[ul]
[li]Competitive Mode which is 5v5 with VOIP on and voice chat on with minimum players of 3v3 and max of 10 players total no bots at al and friendly fire is set to on. Rank[/li][/ul]

[ul]
[li]Old Skool is any rank, friendly fire on, VOIP on, and 8v8 minimum of 3v3. [/li][li](I think this is correct, but someone can correct me.)[/li][/ul]

[ul]
[li]Custom is private matches. [/li][/ul]
Stopwatch which is a longer style match; each team is on offense and defense, best time wins. (Again, Standard, Advanced, Old School, Competitive, Big Team and Custom)

There is some lag, but there have been patches.
You use customized characters for online and custom weapons. You also unlock new outfits to customize your character as you level up. You have custom options for each faction: Security or Resistance.

You have several options for body type:

You can play as a Light Body, Medium Body, or a Heavy Body.

Light are the quickest and most agile but are limited to a light AR and a pistol and are the weakest as far as damage goes.
Medium can use all AR weapons and pistols and shotguns. Medium can run slightly slower than Light, and can reach nearly as many high places.
Heavy is slowest and can’t climb as well but can use Gutlung guns and heavy machine guns and can take more damage.

Matches are Objective and Team-based. You get experience for working towards a common goal. You don’t initially die when shot enough times. Similar to Gears of War, you can get knocked down, DBNO. Down but not out. You can be revived by a Medic. You can be killed when you are downed. However, you can choose to respawn rather than wait for a Medic. It is your call.

On some Maps areas are partially closed or have limited access until a certain objective is accomplished such as blowing up a gate with an explosive charge. Often there are other secondary objectives that can help a team accomplish a primary objective, such as an Operative hacking a side door to open up a flank or gaining access to a command post which can provide benefits to your entire team such as extra health.

Custom Weapon Attachments

Are unlocked ONLY through challenges. There are four challenges, Parkour This, Escort, Be Objective, and Tower Defense. Each challenge has star levels, 3 stars being the most challenging. The first 2 star levels unlock the weapon attachments. The 3 star challenges unlock your score on a leaderboard. Challenges must be done solo for weapon attachments and achievements as well as unlocking leaderboards. But you can play challenges in co-op for scores against your friends.

Oh, well, erm… I have the PC version. But I’m willing to bet it’s universally the same. So… you should be able to create 10 different characters. (All having their owns stats)

Thanks for all of the info!

As I’m reading the Brink Wiki, I think I’m confusing myself even more than I was before. Specifically, the numbers in the upper right hand corner of each ability. They go 1-5, and that is the rank required to purchase that Ability, no? And each ability costs 1 level-up credit? My brain is confused.

1-5 ranks. You unlock higher rank abilities as you level up. So at level 5 you can not purchase Rank 3 or higher abilities until you get to a higher level. Every so many levels you unlock higher rank abilities to purchase. I am actually not sure how many points you get to spend for each level. Someone will correct us hopefully! Ha ha ha!

Exactly. You can save up credits at lower ranks to get more higher rank ones.

You start at level 1. There are 5 RANKS, and 20 levels. Every 5 levels you rank up, and you start at rank 1. So at level 5, you are rank 2, level 10 is rank 3, 15 is rank 4, and 20 is rank 5. Abilities are divided by ranks, and the most useful and important abilities are available at lower levels. When you reset your abilities, you go down one LEVEL, not rank. So if you WERE level 20, rank 5, and you reset your abilities, you would be LEVEL 19, rank 4. Make sense? Each ability costs 1 credit, which is obtained from leveling up. You can spend them as soon as you get them, or save them for higher abilities. 10 characters are possible, which means you can make many different combinations, or even 10 pure characters(each one is one class), although this is not very helpful to your team, and you’ll have a lot of leftover credits.
