Question about class switches

(Chili Squirts) #1

So, I just thought of something. If I play as engineer and buff my gun, buff the command post for extra health, and throw down a turret, then run to a command post and change to a medic, will my turret stay up? Will may buff stay active? If yes, what is stopping me from spawning as an engineer, buffing myself, changing to medic, buffing myself, and then switching to a body armored, self-buffed, minigun wielding soldier with incendiary ammo?

Please tell me this isn’t possible…it would ruin the point of team play if you can do all the most important things yourself.

(Blackened) #2

more than likely any applied buff gets cancelled when you change classes. it would also make sense for the turret to vanish.

(TinMan) #3

Deployables were destroyed on class switch in past SD games.

(tokamak) #4

A diminishing return on the frequency in which you can switch classes would make sense. Say you have a health buff by a medic and you’re on the other side of the map in the thick of a fight, then you wouldn’t want that buff destroyed when he switches classes, you wouldn’t want to find yourself suddenly out of ammo.

If you say ‘well only self-applied buffs are destroyed then’ you would still be with the issue of someone dishing out buffs, switching class and dishing out more buffs.

(Daystar) #5

If you switch class, anything you had ‘out’ as your previous class should disappear. You’ve given up on whatever you were previously doing to switch and do something else.

It would be utterly inappropriate if your buffs or buildings remained after you switched class.

(tokamak) #6

And the buffs given to other players?

(BiigDaddyDellta) #7

Well if you become an engineer and build a blockade then switch to soldier to guard it I see NO reason for that wall to dissapear. On the other hand if your just standing around at a command post buffing yourself your going to miss out on the advance in the game anyway so have fun… at the command post… alone. lol.

(Chili Squirts) #8

Hopefully somebody like Maawdawg who has played the game can pop in and let me know, because this really could be a game breaking mechanic if not handled right. It wouldn’t be fair for you to keep all your own buffs, but then again it wouldn’t be fair for your buffs on other players to be canceled either.

(riptide) #9

It would be fair for all the buffs to be canceled… it’s completely balanced. It’s not like your ammo would disappear though or your health would vanish. You simply can’t get rid of things like that… but you certainly can remove damage/defensive buffs and buildings.

(tokamak) #10

And what about the extra ammo upgrade from the soldier?

(riptide) #11

I already said i think it would be fair to keep it… now… if it’s different ammo from what you normally carry or if it’s a buff they apply to you that effects your ammo … I could see that disappearing. But as far as your ammo count I don’t see any reason why it would change.

(LyndonL) #12

External Buffs to other players should stay in force (they’re going to die soon anyway!) but deployables and self buffs should disappear perhaps.
I was going to say put a time limit on the number of class changes you can do or something (ie no more than 1 change per minute) but that would suck if you chose the wrong class on human error.

(tokamak) #13

The upgrade means you can carry one more clip than you’re usually allowed. If you equip a player with max ammo he receives one extra on top, you get the xp, yet when you switch classes he would then lose the effect?

(Daystar) #14

No, not if you’ve physically given another player something (such as extra ammunition or extra health), then it should stay. But ‘damage buffs’, be it outgoing or incoming, and buildings, should disappear.

And there can’t realistically be a limit on switching within a period of time for that exact reason LyndonL. ^.^

This pretty much sums it up.

(Cankor) #16

If you are a Soldier, plant a bomb, then switch classes the plant will stay. I only say that because it’s how it was in ETQW and it makes sense.

Again, based on ETQW deployables amd mines will dissappear. I can’t see them taking ammo back once it’s been given to you. The buffs are a good question, I’m guessing they disappear, but who knows.

(Nail) #17

buffs disappear when you die, stairs will stay as long as they’re not destroyed by enemy (objectives) tuurets, hard to say, could work either way, but I’m betting they stay for at least a while, may self-decay if you change class

(RadBrad31) #18

The buffs should disappear when you switch classes imo. If the team of players all stood around the command post, got buffed up with engineer damage upgrades, then got rid of the engineers for about 4 soldiers, 2 meds, 2 operatives, and wanted to go take down an objective, I think it would cause an imbalance. Yes, if you die you lose buffs, but what if you’re just incapacitated? When you’re revived you get to keep your buffs I’m guessing?

I could see engineers not being as needed for an offensive assault except for the possibility of a repair or buffing up guns. Depending on the circumstances and all. So I believe that getting rid of all your positive buffs handed out if you change classes should go. Honestly, the buffs don’t seem like game changers (although they could be once we actually get to play it) but small buffs that help a little.

Any buff on you should dissapear.
But I am not sure 'bout the turrets or mines, I think it could make the game feel forced if you had to play as the same class just to keep yer mines.
But as far as I know, you can only set 1 mine/turret, so maybe they could stay, since without repairs they would soon be destroyed.

Also, offtopic, you can’t pick up weapons from fallen comrades/enemies, right?

Turrets and mines disappear if you switch class, Otherwise, everyone would just go Engineer, plant mines and turret, and then change class.
