Hi there! I stumbled upon this game (ET) probably last year, maybe 2, but never gave it much thought. Then a few days ago, downloaded it. I was suprised at what I missed!
Now, mapping. I am a complete noob at this. Well, not COMPLETE, but close enough. I can barely make a halfway decent model in Gmax. 3DsMax is just plain too expensive, so that limits my places to export too. I have done a little bit with Flight Simulator, and even attempted to make a car for Midtown Madness.
I’ve worked with the Unreal engine a little bit, just with the Runtime version demo, and my experiences with the Quake engine are little. I tried mapping for Medal of Honor (the demo version!
) , but after trying to find out how to make maps work on the demo, I just gave up on that lol.
Anyway, I’ve always wanted to make maps and I thought I would try. I can make a simple room in Radiant (I’m using GTK Radiant, is that alright? I’ve seen mention of an SD Radiant, but couldnt find it). But after that, some questions arise.
-
Lighting: It really confuses me. I make a small room, put one light in it, and I can see perfectly. I make a bigger room with a connecting tunnel and another room, and I can barely see anything. Also, how do I make outdoor environments?
-
The “Limbo” Menu: When I press L while testing (I used sv_pure 0, g_gametype 2, and devmap mapname to get to my map) the game freezes. I’m assuming I have to set the gametype in the map to be deathmatch or something? How do I make the map to play it online?
-
Models: Will most of the things in my maps be models? I have found an MD3 exporter for Gmax, and I’m assuming I will use that format. Also, can I use existing models from the game in my map?
-
Scripting: I’m assuming this is advanced stuff, and I should just leave it be for now (with my slight work with MOH Radiant and MOH mapping I figured that out). But, then again, it may be neccessary for stuff like the command post.
Also, I have heard mention of sample maps to view in the editor (Gold Rush, I think was the map). Where can I get this?
Thanks for reading my long post (if you did
), and thank you for any replies!
