Q3Map2 on the Dreamcast

(gamesolid) #1

Q3map2 is used to make levels for the dreamcast now. You can go here for the tutorial: http://gamesolid.net. I can only get 2.3.36 to work- is there a huge difference between 2.3 and 2.5? Will the source for 2.3 ever be available?

Cool. I went to the homepage and it looks nice. What is dreamcast? I was unable to find info on the page, but the again I am not the smartest kid on the block. Is it a mod for quake?

My guess:
It’s the Sega gaming console.

What doesn’t work with later version ?

BTW, it would be trivial to give q3map2 an option to suppress the extra lump it puts with with the I LOVE …, removing the need for using quark to edit it.

It should be noted that anything that properly understands the q3 format would ignore this lump anyway.

Quark does much more than that- all of the binary data is reorganized. Remember, the .bsp on the dreamcast is a proprietary format. When you run it on the 2.5 branch the dreamcast resets. Usually if there is a problem with the data in the lump the level process freezes but this time it gets to the end and resets the dreamcast.

Here is a file comparison report I made: this shows exactly what I am doing with the file. Let me know what kind of sense you can make of this… http://gamesolid.net/FileComparisonSlideshowReport.html

The actual files would be a lot more useful. I can see that the order of some of the lumps was changed, but not much beyond that. For pc based Q3 games, the order doesn’t matter, since they correctly get the lump locations from the header.

If you also have a working bsp from 2.3.x the exact same map built with 2.5, that might be interesting as well. The compile commands you used in each case would also help.
