It sounds interesting… I’ll have to-do a compile and see :slight_smile:

Portal skies were already implimented in ET… this brings them to vq3.

Well, I planned my next map for the Padmod within a wood so, the only thing I have to do is creating a bunch full of details which only can be seen not reached in this small ‘skybox-box’. Great work, this is a fine tool to realize more creative work and ideas.

what hinders you to actually build that geometrie in scale? clip it, lightgrid it, lightmapsize it - whats the advantage of this? (besides not working in vast dimensions in radiant)

AEon, take a look at the first shot… you will notice a bit of difference between the floor. Notice the two huge pillars in the far-ground… notice the texture change… thats the skybox/portal sky… I believe this is the case. Correct me if im wrong y.d.n.a.r

still, hopefully this is the case, and it is true that it is a portal sky… DLing sample map now

EDIT: can there be animated objects inside the “portal sky”? such as a rotating torus? or a patch mesh that is animated or wavy? (understanding that it would affect the speeds and FPS of the level)

Im guessing that cloud layer is a translucent tex between the objects in the sky box and the sky portal "camera" ...of course I could be wrong but that is how I would do it with wolfs native sky box.

off topic, where did ydnar get his name from? …is it a ref to something or a word in another language? …and how is it phonetically spelt? eg “e-d-nar” or “y-dnar”…cus I can never say it out loud, even if Im trying to curse him ...not that I want a name for the voodoo doll I have in my paws or anything ;) ...Im just a curious little ratty.

The advantage is that you actually can fit your skybox to your map right in time only by adding some stuff in the ‘skybox-box’! Without compiling a complete new skybox with terragen, bryce or whatever tools, right in time!
With equal textures you’ve used in the map!
And you don’t have to find out how to get these best fitting textures (cause you’ve also used them in the level) into those tools like terragen or whatever.
Everyone who tried to create a skybox knows how hard it can be to get similar architecture with similar textures in a skybox by creating this in bryce, vue d’esprit or whatever.
For that we’ve got an interesting and amazing feature here!
With that you can add some moving clouds now which are moving around these architectures you’ve build. Did you ever tried adding moving clouds which are running ‘behind’ a mountain or skyscrapers with terragen?
No? Cause it wasn’t possible in the past!

actually I was hoping for test map compile from other folks than ydnar… to better be able to appreciate the new feature. I believe I am pretty well aware how sky portals work. Since they have been used in Elite Force II at lot.

only took me about 5 months at quake3wold’s LEM forum to get ydnar’s (:notworthy:) name ;)…
tip: read it backwards.

and lets not forget about the 3d quality of it all, you move and the ‘sky portal geometry’ changes perspective all so subtly.

havn’t tried it cause I thought the code wasn’t debugged and finished atm.
It also will take some time and this is what I won’t have enough these days,
but would be intersting to see what amazing things possible of course

p.s. mh…english is my second language, read it at q3world-le-forum too that ydnar means ‘randy’, does anyone have a simple explanation what ‘randy’ means, havn’t found it in my dictionary ;), no joke! (something for a german school-english trained brain? :wink: )

and MopAn, according to dictionary.com “randy” can mean lecherous, or characterized by frank, uninhibited sexuality :wink:

but since Im a pervy old "luv rat" at heart, I cant knock another guy for being lecherous :smiley:

so I personally admire anyone who can learn enlgish as a second language, let alone use it with something technical like games modding or dev.
