Public server files vs cracked servers

(Mustkunstn1k) #1

Unfortunetly most games nowadays partner with specific server providers so people can’t put up their own servers. The main reason for that is probably the fact that then people can’t pirate the multiplayer with cracked servers. And ofcourse some publishers make an exclusive deal with only one provider so they can make more money.

What do you think Brink will have? What would you prefer?

I really wish there would be a way to give out public server files, but still a way how to make sure people can’t pirate it. For example they could play on cracked servers, but not use their characters because the game needs to connect to some master server to check if the game is legit and only then you can get your unlocked stuff.

There are none of the big server providers in my country. :frowning:

Can’t you set you own ‘lobby’ in Steam? Or is that a whole other thing? Dunno.

A quick search on the forum for simply “server” makes you for an example find this.

Been lots of talk about this so check it out. You shouldn’t have to be worried!

ehrw - Hmm, that’s good. But have people discussed the aspect of cracked servers and how SD will stop people from pirating the multiplayer?

(Seyu) #5

It’s Bethesda’s responsibility to check pirating. Anyway, looking at anti-piracy measures’ past record I’d say that they’ll just end up as an annoyance for the legitimate consumer. Steam should be sufficient as the obligatory DRM.

I haven’t seen that specific talk anywhere. Though that market has never really been any big? Since you need a cdkey to play online and those keys keeps getting blacklisted if they’re warezed?
People will always warez singleplayer games but multiplayer ain’t really the same thing.

Pretty much every game with public server files can be played with a pirated copy in multiplayer. People create hacked servers so cd keys don’t matter.

Not getting into the whole piracy thing but in short, does it really matter? IMO it’s better to give your paying customers the freedom to run their own servers than punish them to stop a group of people who’d probably not buy the game either way.

edit: and as pirate servers don’t directly interfer with legit ones it’s not really an issue for those of us buying the game.

And as crysis 2 fails giving access to server files the massive cancel of preorder begins!See the interview of gabe newell talking about piracy .This guy is awesome

I think you mean this one:

(Nail) #11

Piracy is a war-like act committed by private parties

hard to equate with downloading a file

Yep exactly that one. Some ppl know how to treat their community and i believe splash damage must do the same as it did with their previous releases.I dont want to play a mutliplayer game for 4 months and then move to another(cause every developer except for some ,design their games exactly for this reason) .I want it to last for years and expect to have some competitive scene:>
You cannot blame piracy when your product is not suited to the needs of your gamers, you should blame only your failure and your greedy character as a company to make only money from them.
