Proxy mines and my sadness

(Crash) #1

So since the patch Ive been playing my fair share of stoker and he is truly fun, no doubt. When we play a map where an engineer is needed I bounce over to my 81 hour played, ~5,500 kills flurry fury of a merc Proxy. I bought bush and gave him a go and Ive played fletcher a few times during free rotation but I just dont get the same satisfaction playing an engineer as I do as proxy.

Here lies my sadness. Her mines which may or may not have been OP before have been turned into something that can never be said as being remotely OP. I dont cry on the forums, ever. Most things that happen in this game I usually just let roll off because its a video game and its whatever but when Proxy mines dont kill like they used to, I want to get butt hurt. I want to expose myself to the criticism of internet know it alls and fucktards. On more than on occasion since the update the mines I throw have failed to kill as effieciently as they once did. Ill throw a mine on a c4 plant and watch the explosion kill no one around (this has raised WTF questions from enemies on each of these many occasions). Ill throw a mine and shoot it as a merc comes near and it results in no death a majority of the time. I even conducted an experiment with a friend and watched him just run over the mine to see what happens and the only people to die were the squishies. He even avoided more dmg by jumping, not long jumping, to my dissapointment.

I keep playing her and I keep throwing mines becuase I will get the occasional kill with a mine now but I use them as a sort of rear guard now. Im not as offensive with them anymore because they just dont deliver anymore. I never saw anything on the forums to warrant such a change and Im left wondering as to why change them? Was it just thrown in there with the sweeping changes to explosives?

My soul needs clarification. Her mines are but a shadow of their once glory.

Well, Proxy wasn’t even that great before the CW update : never used in competition as far as I remember (I am probably wrong). Her ability greatly lacks of versatility, shotguns are poor weapons in competition and the low hp value does not help at all. Fortunately, she can use the Hochfir, but it’s crealy not enough. Back to the mines : following what I saw in the patch note, the changes didn’t seemed to be that bad though. Wasn’t the inner radius of proximity mines made wider ?

I think we maybe should raise Proxy’s offensive capabilities a bit : how about letting her throw her mines further ? I don’t feel like it’s asking for too much, and it makes the “mine + shoot” combo a bit more efficient for flanking proxies. Else, we can still make her even better defensively : I think we can make the mines apply a spotted effect for X seconds on enemies that trigger it (and maybe all harmed enemies as well). Of course the effect won’t be applied if the mine if triggered by an enemy gunshot. A lot of Proxies use their mines as some kind of alarm, so it just allows them to easly make that “alarm” ringing for everybody.

She was great pre-CW patch. I understand that people use comp as a standard to judge mercs off of and thats fine, if this game was a competitive game. This game has a failing comp scene with an unclear future. So we take merc value based off of day in day out game play. Bush is a great comp engy because of health and weapon selection. Rhino isnt a smart comp choice because hes fat and slow with even fewer pro’s. Considering the majority of the population who play do not play in scrims or established comp matches I think that argument needs to take a back seat to the actual usability of the mercs for the majority. I mean, if comp was the only way to gauge merc usefulness then why should SD ever make any other merc that deviates from Fragger, Sawbonez, Skyhammer, Bush, and Nader meta?

Everyone hates proxy because she has shotguns that arent penalized, shes nimble and quick, and could kamikaze her mines. People complained that they were hard to react to or avoid, other would say it was super easy to do both. @astoundingShellfish echoes a majority of these remarks. Her inner circle dmg radius was cut in half and her outer radius was increased by .4m. Mine dmg was increased to 180 from 150 I guess to supplement the reduction of inner dmg radius. If her offensive capability were subpar people wouldnt associate her name to go fuck yourself. There was nothing wrong with her aside the fact of the few people who knew how to run her well pissed everyone off. She isnt a pick up and top frag kind of merc. She has a learning curve with all weapon systems. She has a learning curve on utilizing her mines appropriately. She wasnt an “easy” merc. The fact that I still, on multiple occasions, watch people walk into a mine laid trap say on 2nd obj of trainyard or last obj on terminal and not get killed, concerns me. It all worked kosher in the grand scheme of things prior to the patch so my million dollar question is, why change what wasnt broken?

I agree completely with the above poster. Proxy had a lot of personality in how she played before the update, and I feel like she lost a lot of that.

Playing proxy now feels almost a little futile; like I am not only fighting against other players, but also fighting against the merc itself.

I am glad, however, that I can still drop mines from the roof of the first objective in underground, shoot them, and blow them up in the unsuspecting other teams face.

Her mines were fine.

He core charactre is annoying, but fine, I don’t know why they changed her either. They should of let her mines gib anyway, because of how rare they actually do anything. Proxy does need a very slight buff in the way of her ability.

And for the record, I hate that little gremlin. She still needs an ability buff though.

lol didnt know they were changed. played her alot lately. this explains why things felt a bit different post patch. still get kills with mines on the smartasses that never learns
but i never used the mines as a primary so maybe thats why i didnt really notice that the mines changed.
anyways, another examples where a dev listens to a few whiners instead of the majority.
wish they did more surveys like the CW survey so everyone could voice their opinion without having to defend themselves on forums.

(Crash) #8

I dont know if thats the case with the devs but Im thinking they just lumped all expolisves into the “balance.” I just dont like it but I dont like the other engy mercs so here I am. I still get kills so its w/e

Feels like mines were changed due to uniformity sake.

Giving her a 3rd mine so we can double plant or give active mines a sensor attribute would be nice.

Take away the audio warning unless they have Guardian Angel.
