I guess you just experienced the mine + shot combo ? Well, welcome in DB pubs and its infinite sources of frustration.
Proxy, without being truly overpowered, is always a gigantic source of frustration for new players and a big pain in the ass for the others. Shotguns + mines is definitely a cheese combo. Add the unavoidable (though fairly predictable) mine + shot trick overexploited by most decent Proxies around, and you get a mighty pub stomper. Yet, she’s a terrible character to play in competition due to how unpractical her ability is (defensive ability that can only be used offensively at a very low range) and her low hp pool.
The mine toss is fine. Shotguns and manual detonation of the mine is where the real issue is. Shotguns are known to be the plague of new players at least since the beginning of the closed steam beta while being a constant source of frustration for the others, without being good in competition, and Proxy would probably be much more bearable for other player’s sanity if she couldn’t manually detonate the mine that fast. Proxies who never manually detonate the mines and just run with the mines in their hands are just trash tho.
Proxy does not need a straight nerf : that would bury the character far below the ground level, almost at the same point Phantom is (though I know that idea can feel attractive to a lot of people around here from time to time, including me). What she needs is some kind of rework of her ability she can become a bit more viable in competition without being a gigantic source of frustration for those fighting against her. In addition, shotguns should get some kind of rebalance as well, so they become a more interesting weapon option in competition without being able to trample 80-90 hp mercs in an obnoxious, body-shotted one-hit kill.
