Proxy Defense Strategy

I am quite new to the game, but I would like to learn about how to properly defend a map using the Proxy class. To me, objective specialist is only good when behind, and is used as a way to balance classes that tend to only be useful when ahead.

However Proxy… is very good when behind, due to her offensive speed and firepower, but I have trouble understanding how to use her to stabilize my team’s lead.

First thing to note, you should always, ALWAYS have at least one have engineer on the team.

Essentially Proxy is the skirmisher. Try to flank as much as you can and pick 1v1’s. Lay down the burst damage and get out. Mines, are pretty self explanatory I think. However, if you end up in a crowded room, toss one down and shoot it. Watch the noobs cry for nerfs.

Redeye rushes tell an entirely different story. They aren’t seen in pubs, but having one sparks, kira, and the rest redeyes, it’s a world of invisible pain. I heard about something like this on a competitive server, and the rush turned out to be very effective.

What’s the story? You don’t need engineers. Neither do you need recons, fire support, or assaults. Medics on the other hand…

Ugh, I hate playing medic, but it’s so necessary that I waste a loadout card on medic just because that otherwise it’s going to be a hard time. Gibbing is the only thing that counters medics, and that’s going to be nerfed. Sadly, the conditions for gibbing are very situational.

Finally, if I wanted an engineer merc, I go for Bushwacker. He’s more cerebral than Proxy and rewards accuracy more. I would like to see Bushwacker have Kira’s assault rifles, like the semi-automatic one.

Ugh, I am actually a little disappointed about this. Proxy is basically a very situational class then, only good if you are behind, but as soon as you are ahead it’s better to just off yourself and pick another class, unless you are on offense.

It would be cool if she gets another ability like electric fences or something. Increase her defensive ability, using speed as a tool for that end. Of course, that means she needs to have a few nerfs to balance that out, but meh. Her mines are terrible for defense anyways, as they are obvious, she can’t exploit range and thus needs to put herself or her mines at risk if she wants to camp an area.

But anyways, I guess I’m not a Proxy player. All she is good at is responding to an objective, and having a total scamp defense which is easily countered with cautious thinking.

Hi, I consider Proxy my main so I’ll try and help out here (~100 hours on her atm). First thing you should know is you should never ever fight on top of your mines unless you are suiciding a room or something. I see a lot of new Proxys place a mine down and then start defusing on top of it. Any decent player will just shoot your mine and blow you up. When playing defense, I use my mines as a makeshift sensor. By placing mines in pathways where enemies are likely to flank you, you can be aware of their presence before they even see you. As for placing mines, it takes some experience with the maps to know where people are likely to go, but there are several good guidelines. You want your mines to be tripped obviously, so they need to be where people run by them. But at the same time they should be subtle enough that people don’t spot them and neutralize them. To this end, the top of stairways or the inside of doorframes are great spots. Really anywhere enemies will turn a corner and not be able to leap away in time will kill a lot of baddies. This may all sound very basic but I’m surprised at the amount of players who just leave mines out in the open for people to neutralize.
As for weapons, I prefer the Hochfir to the two shotguns because it is more versatile. Playing with shotgun you are more lethal with surprise attacks and flanking, but you lose out on a lot of range fights where you’re left with your machine pistol. As Sir_Slam suggested, pop out of cover, get some burst off and gtfo. You cannot go toe to toe with Fraggers etc. and mercs like Fletcher or Nader will turn around and one shot you with their explosions. If your enemies chase you into your explosive trap, so much the better.
So basically you have a merc that’s good for flanking and defending from enemy flanking. Use her speed to get out of fights and to outmaneuver enemies. You should try and avoid big firefights unless your team needs you or you can suicide mine a big defensive position. Or, of course, if you are needed for repairs. By securing some of the side areas you can let the rest of your team focus on holding or taking the objective spot.
I hope you found this informative and more questions are always welcome.

Although Proxy is good for point defense, she can also roam effectively.
