Prone

(Patriotqube) #61
That’s exactly my problem. DB shouldn’t be a game where you need to constantly move all the time. DB is a game where you need to move MOST of the time sure, but not all the time, that is stale and repetitive. Prone (as well as lean and even slide) would add to the diversity of the game. By keeping them out you give players only a limited number of tools to deal with situations.

Right now you only encounter players who are standing, crouching, running or sprinting (let’s forget about jumping and sliding because those two are temporary modes). Four modes of engagement that greatly limits the number of possibilities in a scenario. If players can prone and lean then you greatly add to the possible scenarios in which a game plays out.

Note, this is only an increase in the absolute number of possible scenarios. The average scenarios will still revolve around standing and moving players, the core game remains the same but the essential difference is that the possibilities greatly increase. With a higher range of possibilities players can’t keep on comfortably relying on their opponents constantly doing the same and that’s what I find important in a game.

Not being able to do this doesn’t only make me feel more inhibited, it also means that I’m constantly aware that I know my opponents know that I’m not able to do this. It means that I’m playing without my capacity to be less predictable and that is just downright frustrating because it pretty much is my only edge in multiplayer games.

More elaborate movement and higher fidelity to engage with the surroundings greatly increases the diversity in scenarios in a game and therefore greatly decreases the predictability of the game. This in turn means that matches will be less similar from each other and it keeps the players on edge, and once that happens their brain will keep daydreaming about new tactics even when they’re not playing and once that has happened you’ve got a player hooked.

This is the process that makes tactical shooters so addictive and this is what sucks gamers into its world.
+1 and some rep, nicely put

for freedom, ok.

but remember : sprint and jump will always win against idle and prone in a fast paced fps … history proves it

(tokamak) #63

Definitely. I’m not expecting these things to be very prominent in the game. I’m all for a considerable delay in lying down and getting up. Same for lean, leaning around something may take time. And as for slide, same thing, only make it possible to break a sprint so it can’t be done excessively.

All these stances are only meant to give you an edge in exceptional situations and only if done right, if done wrong it should screw you over completely.

(potty200) #64

I would personally like to see prone. I wouldn’t be upset if they left it out though.

If they do have it. Please have a prone delay on so you can’t shoot when going into prone or coming out of prone.

(RasteRayzeR) #65

ok for prone taking time to go in and out, but slide and crouch have to go really fast, no delay

(tokamak) #66

Sure no delay for slide that would ruin it. But it can only be done from a sprint.

And perhaps no delay for the first lean but definitely something to stop players from moving around like Neo and dodging bullets like a lunatic.

(RasteRayzeR) #67

but that’s what the fun is all about !

(tangoliber) #68

I think prone would detract from the fun of the game. I don’t think all diversity is good if it waters down a game’s identity. A lot of games are great for the purity of their mechanics.

(tokamak) #69

Like Quake Wars.

(RasteRayzeR) #70

+1, finally someone who also sees DB should not become a copy …

(tokamak) #71

This argument is only sentimental and has nothing to do with gameplay. And even as a sentiment it falls flat on it’s face:

Modern Warfare 2 is one of the few modern shooters that didn’t include lean because of consoles. Simplifying mobility only makes this game more like the epitome of mainstream shooters. So much for identity…

(RasteRayzeR) #72

There is something you have not understood yet : DB != CoD

This is a completely different setup we have : only for PC, fast paced, and with a unique signature and style. There is no room on the market for a counter strike doubled by a CoD design … this is DIRTY BOMB, and only Dirty Bomb, not a bit of CoD, not a bit of any other game.

CoD is exactly what DB should not be. And whether there will a prone or not in DB should be decided by only taking what DB is into account. I have never played any CoD more than 20 hours, because it’s boooooring. Though I have played for over 5 years to W:ET … spot the difference.

And if you want mobility, don’t put a prone in the game lol

Wanting to keep a game lean and avoid adding unnecessary mechanics is not sentimental. You can disagree by saying that you think prone would significantly add to the game. I personally don’t think prone or lean or anything designed to reduce a player’s hitbox and reward stationary play would add anything of value to this game…just clutter or a negative impact.

(tokamak) #74

And I agree that it’s meant to reward stationary play in certain situations. In a fight between attackers and defenders it means that situations will occur where being stationary is the best option. That’s the entire point, right now players aren’t being rewarded for identifying those situations because they’ve not been given the tools to act on Right now DB simply doesn’t offer the tools to augment that advantage further.

The idea that it will slow down the game is nonsense however, the objective simply doesn’t allow that. Most of the time prone and lean will be completely useless and we’re also going to see many instances where players using it wrong will get swiftly punished by their opponents.

(RasteRayzeR) #75

Then I don’t know why we argue lol, you have the same idea on your mind as I do … yet I still don’t know why waste time on a feature like this that will not be used or if used, will lead to the player raging …

by implementing slide like in Brink, among other fun results, one would get a forced prone, which teammates could use only in pairs. Say one wants to get super low prone spread with a weapon in a camping place - ask a mate to slide you down, so you can remain proned  So called assisted prone

How about that additional new megatac huh? ^^

In Brink, if you slid into a teammate while he was using the UAV… then he would suddenly be able to shoot from the UAV (the bullets still come from the direction of the player, but go through walls or whatever to reach the target.) It was an awesome glitch that nobody minded because it wasn’t powerful enough to actually use in a competitive game. We had some UAV deathmatches.

(Stoffifee) #78

I fully agree with this. As for “lean” - i miss it even more than prone though. So please … let us prone and lean.

Cheers.

P.S.: Maybe this should have a poll? :o

(tokamak) #79

I don´t like polls. They ask opinions before they are discussed. It is very possible (but also improbable) that someone talks me out of my opinion in this discussion and if that happens for more people then the poll results become counter-productive.

(jamiewalker) #80

dolphin diving in db :frowning: I personally dont like prone its just petty’s up fire fights. holf shift, press left right, then prone… i don’t feel it
