Problems with ET/GTKRadient along with map compile

Hello, I am having a bit of trouble with alot of things, first i’ll tell you the specifications for my computer to help you guys out a little more with my problem. :wink:

Windows XP Home Edition
Pentium 4 Processor 2.66Mhz
Cable Internet
LinkSys Router
GeForce 4 MX 440 Graphics Card
512MB RAM
120GB Hard Disk Space

Ok, now that we have the specifications for my computer out of the way, let me tell you about the problems i’m having.

  1. When I open GTKRadient 1.4.0 and try to open my already saved .bsp map file, GTKRadient comes in error and closes down
  2. When I open up Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory and open my already compiled .bsp map, it opens up with no textures even though I set them in GTKRadient 1.4.0
  3. When i’m in my .bsp map in Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory and press the “L” button for the Limbo menu, ET comes in error and closes down

Does anyone know what the problem may be with my computer or map? I have been surfing the net and haven’t found anything online, so I decided to post in this forum, hopefully someone will be able to help me with this, any help is appreciated, thank you.

For #1 Need more info about the Error, post ur log (at bottom of radiant)
For #2 Would these textures be for your terrain ?
For #3 You need to set the mapcoordsmaxs and mapcoordsmins in your worldspawn.

Search the forums here for #3 Their must be hundreds of topics for this !

For #1: Radiant or any other editing tool won’t open .bsp. That’s like opening an .exe with a C++ compiler. You need to open the souce file, the .map

Someone should make something like a sticky thread for the mapcoordsmins & mapcoordsmaxs. It seems this is what keeps most people from compiling their map (it did for me until 2 months ago). I do it this way: I make a brush of 64 x 64 in the Y - X view, then I put it next to the upper left corner, then I check out what the coordinates for that one are. Afterwards, I drag the brush towards my lower right corner and duplicate it (spacebar) . Then, I put the duplicate on the corner of the other brush and read these coordinates. That’s the easiest way for me…cause I’m no Albert Einstein when it comes to mathematics…

Edit = after madjack had responded: Is there actually any way to open a .bsp file? Like, first converting it to something else, or with a special de-compiler?

I built my own little square room by following a tutorial from a website and used some GTKRadient textures for the walls, flooring, and ceiling. But I may use some textures for terrain later on when I get more advanced into building ET maps.

For #1 I meant the .map file not .bsp file, I also found out the file I was trying to open was not the .map file but some other file called the same thing in the same place where the .map file was, though when I tried to open .map file with GTKRadient after I found it in the folder, it came up in error, here’s what the log file looks like below:

@ Aikon, q3map2 can decompile a .bsp but though I never used that, I was told there was some things that will need to be fixed in the .map file. I can’t tell you what though. Anyway, it can decompile it. You can open the .bsp in a text editor too, the entity list is in there in text format but that’s useless except on certain circumstances like changing a spawnflag or some small thing where the number of characters will be the same (can’t insert chars in a binary file. actually it can be done, but better not to do it). I have done that on a compiled map that took a while to compile to fix a tiny thing.

@ Wizman: I’m not really an expert on this sorta stuff, I’m still learning too, but something tells me you don’t have any brushes in that .map file…can you actually open it in Radient and see some brushes in there?

I have had this error with my train-textures before as well. Some people had told me to fix my shaderfiles, which I checked numerous times but there was no mistake in them. So if anyone reads this who knows what we’re talking about, please post.

mapcoordsmins kinda tut is on my site… Check the FAQ. There’s not much in there because of time restraint but that particular bit and some small/fast tips are there.

@ wizman, that map is fubar’ed. Start a new one. This one will always crash radiant. There are no brushes whatsoever in there.

when you put something in a map, the squares stuff you “draw”? That’s a brush.
