Problem with safe_malloc link wanted

Hello everyone!

I am fairly new to mapping and have run into a few problems. A huge problem that is driving me crazy is a safe_malloc error I understand it has to do with lighting in some way. I would greatly appriciate if somone would give me a link to some more info on how it coulc be fixed or even better a link to a patch. Thank you for your time and help.

If you get a safe_malloc error during the -light phase, it means your machine ran out of memory.

What OS are you running, and how much RAM and page file does your machine have?

The -lomem switch can sometimes alleviate this problem.

not to sure what your asking but i have 512 mb at 3.0 my computer is about 4 months old

Also in regardes to the lowmem switch is that an option that i can select to change how it compiles?

Also since i am new i have not fully understood the use of caulking until resently. So i am gogin back through everything and useing to cut down on memory or whatever it cuts down on. I am assuming that not useing caulk has over worked it or somthing like that.
Question:
Will re doing everything using clauk greatly affect this error as in help it?

doesn`t sound like your computer is under powered, but you might want to check the size of the windows swap, page file, as that can help in long compiles… mines set to a min and max of 800mb, some people probably use a lot more this is fine for me.

also you can do a test with your map, where you save a copy under a new name, then use the texture menu find, replace option and change every thing to caulk, then paint a just few visible brush faces with a normal texture, like a concrete, wood or grass… if you then compile this and see a big difference in the compile time, your know you`ve got to start using caulk more often.

also try to make as many brushes detail as possible, unless they touch the outside void, where they need to be structural… as this will reduce the vis compile time.

In cordance with ratty…I may sound kinda stupid but how do I check the size of windows swap,page file? Also do areas of space make a big differnce such as a whole bunch of rooms and space that will not be used in between?

Also i still have teh error… Any ideas were i can find a patch or somthing for it i found the following link that talked about a patch but not sure if one is out to grab.

in win98se we can edit the swap, page file size and location in the “my computer\system properties\performance\virtual memory”

Use the -lomem switch. There is no “patch.”

You probly think im really dense but…what is -lomem…assuming it means low memory and it is same thing spoken above.

Also when it comes

Do i want the number to be lower or greater. I was thinking it is a pareniter for how much it can use then i was thinking mabee it was how much you want it to use…but im not sure?

with the swap, pagefile try setting both the min and max numbers to 800, on a hard drive or partition where you know there is enough free space, I think we need to leave at least 100mb left on the drive.

windows then seems to automatically allocate about the set size, for swapping programs running in the background to the front of it`s task list.

-lomem is probably a switch added to the bsp stage of compile, in a batch file or radiant .qe4 project file.

I have been thinking about my problem and have been tryign to understand it. I know that i can run simple compiles such as bsp and other little ones. I cant run vis all the way through. So as a result i cant have lighting and shadow in my map which i have nearly mapped out

So i definatly cant do a major compile. Is their a compile that has everything i need to complete the map that doesn’t entail the big compiles mabee something short ans sweet. (still tryign to figure out the compiles) lol
Im sure my problem is in vis which is a sad place for it to be lol
