Private servers

(Draceus) #1

After the great cup yesterday we were playing some PUGS on the private servers and after the match was over the server went down and when we checked the server list they were all gone.

Why cant you just keep atleast one or two servers running that we can use to PUG / Scrim on?

Is it too much to ask or what?

They probably don’t want to create an “Us and Them” situation, by giving a certain part of the community the PW for the servers while not giving it to others. (I mean, If they give it to everyone, it won’t be a very private server, will it)

I agree that they could do with providing some servers to cater to the more competitive side of the community though.

I’ve just no idea on the best way to handle this :\

Exactly. And if that’s the case let us rent servers then, I know most of the teams are more than willing to pay for the cost associated with having a server.

And of course I understand that this is a beta and you have said private servers are coming “soon” but lets face it, they are working as we all saw yesterday so just keep them up. If someone want to join pugs all they need to do is ask, join mumble and there we go. There is no requirement to join!

All I want is a statement on why they were taken down, MissMurder you here?

can’t you do this with the server browser ?

(Kroad) #6

yes, just go in a 6v6 server to host some 5v5 pugs, if anyone joins we just tell them to leave, i’m sure they’ll be fine with it

also, private servers were the only ones with FF

nah they’re not ready, they haven’t decided on how to monetize them just yet

Well it only makes sense if we have to pay for a server really, but since they are clearly working at this very moment they should also be up free of charge until they make a way we can pay for them

Or allow friendly fire to be turned on in match making. (I don’t think its an option)

They are clearly working when SD has full control over the backend; you can’t tell if server admins would not be able to abuse the binaries in some way right now, which must be why SD are holding off with releasing them. Been confirmed on one of the recent community streams that they are working on them, so hold on tight.

Okay fair enough

A good way I’ve seen communities deal with handing out servers for pugs was in the Australian TF2 community Ozfortress. You went into an IRC server, requested a server with a certain command and you were given connect details, rcon and a password which is randomized. This allowed anyone and everyone to host their own private games with full access to server commands.

we had limited access passworded servers in Alpha, be nice to have them back but SD ran those servers, I believe Nexon handles the server poo these days although I seem to remember a PUG server in early Beta
