Preload on Steam

(LyndonL) #1

Hi SD,

PLEASE please please let us preload it on Steam a day or 2 in advance… That way we can play it the minute it’s released… or at least after we’ve decrypted the files etc, rather than having to wait for however many GB downloads!!

Like above, I guess this too is Bethesda’s decision, but maybe you can answer… Will it be available at midnight UK time or US East Coast time?

Also, I’d love to be able to preload the server files too so that I can get them running prior to launch! Will they be available and updateable via the HLDSupdatetool being as game updates will come through Steam? Will you have decent instructions at launch for how to set up the server (including what the server.cfg settings all are/do) or like a lot of devs will you leave it to the community to decipher?

Thanks

minute of release? get the retail version and play it days before steam releases it

(.Chris.) #3

How would that work without steam authentication, is that still restricted to release date?

(Joe999) #4

nobody knows since there’s no information. but if i buy the game and can’t play the single player instantly without being forced to connect to the internet, then they can keep their game, especially with the much vaunted “blurring the lines between online and offline mode”. because in that case i’d like to know their definition of “offline”.

(.Chris.) #5

Its blurring the lines of singleplayer and multiplayer though.

(Joe999) #6

i doubt that they risk a sales impact by doing the ubisoft nonsense with interpretation of singleplayer = forced online gameplay

and the locki says:

… so we’ve also taken the step to blur the lines between offline and online gaming.

Yeah we all saw what happened to Starcraft 2 because of that…

(Joe999) #8

in which aspect does brink compare to starcraft 2? i’m not interested in starcraft 2 and i don’t know what happened with it.

(tokamak) #9

You need to be online before you can go offline with it, the game is a blockbuster hit.

(Joe999) #10

i doubt that you can compare a hype-game like starcraft with a rather unknown game like brink which needs to make a reputation first, especially with that much competition in the genre. bethesda doesn’t have much freedom to piss buying customers off in whatever way they want.

(tokamak) #11

Brink is not an unknown game any more. What SC2 does is demonstrate that it’s not an issue for people at all.

Blurring the online/offline experience

To my mind this is merely saying singleplayer/multiplayer
Which we pretty much know what that’s all about i.e. A single storyline for both, encouraging everyone to play multiplayer

Can’t see it letting you play the game full offline, i.e. Install straight from DVD without an Internet connection

(Joe999) #13

i beg to differ. only because you live on the sd forum, it doesn’t mean everyone does. and the only thing that sc2 demonstrates is that when people weigh out the pros and cons, they can deal with the cons because they know what they get in the pros. but what has brink shown so far? some screenshots and a trailer. and the always recurring “smart” which i’ve grown tired of long time ago. bethesda doesn’t even allow people to film at events where brink is presented.

tbh if i weren’t a fan of sd games and brink would have any pissing-me-off limits whatsoever, i wouldn’t even consider getting it. just look at the ubi games. there’s a reason why ubi dropped their play-protection for a game like ruse. and you don’t get any numbers for eg assassins creed on pc. guess why.

Brink is Steamworks and plenty of games have done fine with that. It means “forced” authentication through Steam.

(Joe999) #15

well, just checked what happend with fallout: new vegas:

Fallout: New Vegas uses Steamworks for achievements and other features (such as friends lists, cloud storage of user preferences and so on). Use of Steam will be mandatory at retail. So what does that mean? We’ve implemented Steamworks in as light and unobtrusive a way as possible. Yes, you will have to install Steam when you install Fallout: New Vegas if you don;t already have it. And yes, you will have to be online at the time of that initial install. However you can install the game on as many systems as you want (with no restrictions!), and you do not have to be online to play the game after your initial activation. Not only that, but once the game has activated on Steam, you can throw out the game DVD entirely and just download the game over Steam. If you don’t even have a DVD drive, you can just take the CD-Key from the box, enter it into Steam, and download it without ever using the disc at all.

Everyone that I know that preordered and then preloaded their copies of Black Ops on Steam all had to wait until around 9-10am of release day before they could play.
If you want to play as soon as humanly possible on release day, bring your laptop to the midnight launch and your local GameStop and install Brink on your laptop in the parking lot and play over 3G while your mommy drives you home.
