pre-loading ready and a question ready as well

So pre-loading is ready on steam, though I have a question.

Brink seems to be awfully small (5 Gigs) when you have the sheer number of custimization options, is this good programming or does pre-loading only download 75% of the game? I was pretty sure pre-loading downloading about 99% or something…dunno how it works.

Oh well, 3 more days.

on a completely unrelated note if I get 1000 people to click this link I get a TF2 hat;

Not that I’ll even touch that game in the coming weeks…but I need something to focus my brain on and Huckleberry Finn gets boring after about 4 hours of straight reading.

I also was confused by the small size of the game. I thought they were usually around 8 Gb.

Lol, good luck tryinng to get people on this forum to click your little link for a hat!

It’s not like 5 gigs is small. And let’s not forget that the levels in sp and mp are all the same. Besides, it’s not like they pre-created every customization option.

And no, I will not watch your youtube video.

(hamstein) #4

Wasn’t STALKER like 3 gigs or something with that massive game world and all?

Size doesn’t matter ! hides penis

This.

The game is around that mark, it has pre-loaded 99%, but remember that most of the things in the SP are mirrored to the MP. With games such as BFBC2 there were heavy single-player areas only.

As far as I´m concerned, Steam doesnt preload the raw game files, but encrypted and compressed ones. So when may 10 / 13 comes you will be able to hit the “Play” button but it will take a few minutes to decrypt & de-compress them before the game will start, effectively meaning that the local game files will definitely be over 5 gb.

(Shadowfrost) #8

Steam gives you all the files, dont worry, But it gives you and outdated version of the .exe that is incompatible with any computer ever

Stalker’s textures for the terrain were simply a lot of repeated tiles.

Brink utilises virtual texturing which allows many versions of the same texture (for different distances) to be used efficiently. Because this is so much graphical gain for such a little loss of improvement developers go to town on the amount of texture they push into the game which is likely to contribute largely to the size of the game.

Not saying this is the only reason for the weight. I’m sure there’ll be many quality vs quantity examples.

(kratier) #10

size doesnt matter, its a multiplayer focused game, so this is 5 gigs of multiplayer content

^
I’m not worried about the small size, rather surprised at how they were able to fit it into such a small size. I mean Shogun 2 was like 15 gigs and there were only about 50 or so unit skins in an RTS game. The maps are rather bland too.

Bigger != better.
If you can create a game in 2 GB’s where it has the same content of a simular game with 3GB of size, it means that your way of storing files is better and will result in faster downloading, installing and loading of the game!
