Pre-emptive EAC concern...

(K1X455) #1

I have games that employ EAC already (Paladins, The Division and soon RB6 and Dirty Bomb).

Does EAC have a whitelist of OEM apps that won’t get flagged as cheat? IE, Logitech, Microsoft, Tyon, SteelSeries, ThermalTake, Gigabyte, Acer, ASUS, etc?

What about network traffic monitoring tools?

(TitaniumRapture) #2

There is quite a lot of hate on steam about easyanticheat. So i am quite worried too.

I got no issues with EAC’s scanning. It’s the whitelist of apps from hardware manufacturers and legitimate apps that might flag my machine that is “considered” a cheat, ie scripted keyboard mouse movement or keypresses that are legitimately made by OEM like Logitech or SteelSeries. I got top of the line keyboard from SteelSeries but I can’t use the app to record keystrokes for macros.

EDIT:
EU has very strict privacy laws and as stated in their EULA:

“…, only when licensed in the context of competitive Counter–Strike tournaments, we do offer the possibility for uploading in–game screenshots to the organiser’s servers. Note that those screenshots will never touch our servers, and hence are governed by the organiser’s EULA.”

Considering it’s used higher up in the Counter Strike leagues, you would think that it has been well developed by now.

(K1X455) #5

So… does it mean it’s safe to use the OEM macros I can do with SteelSeries, Tyon, etc?

(SnakekillerX) #6

You are probably best asking them directly.

Unfortunately, it seems like they aren’t the best at actually answering posts, for example:

But I wouldn’t trust anyone’s word on whether or not you can get banned for using things unless it comes from Easy Anti Cheat themselves.

Considering what I’ve found out about EAC it seems as though it would most likely be fine. The first game they partnered with was a game that would have seen heavy usage of macros (Magika: Wizard Wars) so you can always go ask long time players of that game for any additional information they might have.

I’ve talked about anti-cheat systems a lot on this forum and the layers required to make a game as protected as possible. EAC not only has the ability to prevent/detect cheats with runtime process scanning (like most AC solutions) but it also has built-in client/server analysis that can use statistics to detect obvious cheaters. So, hopefully, ragebotting won’t really be seen in DB going forward. I’ve never played a game with EAC before but at least it’s featurelist covers a couple of the major layers of protection needed.

I am a bit concerned about things like youtube, teamspeak, other games anticheat/other games automatic updater’s running unexpectedly, if your account is hijacked, custom configs and huds, and other programs will work with EAC. I don’t want anyone to be falsely/permanently banned when they are not actually cheating/hacking. I hope everyone’s questions can/will be answered. maybe the devs could make a announcement/forum post/video about how this anticheat will work and address peoples concerns?

(Nail) #9

it’s gotta be better than Not Good Shipt

afaik, it’s used in some high end comp, should be OK

(Mc1412013) #10

So hypotheticaly in the unlikely event that eac acts stupid on some machines or not even run when released into the wild what will they do? I doubt they can reverse the next update back to ngs.

Also i think ill wait a few hours before opening game makensure theres no issues reported first

(K1X455) #11

It is actually the false positives that I/we are weary about, and thus do not wish to tempt fate without due knowledge of the full risk while using legitimate OEM or other software that can get flagged as cheat. In the video, the dev mentioned that it is possible and they do their best to quickly change the status of players who get flagged. However, the consequences are just as damaging when you get flagged with a VAC violation, albeit at short duration and the “sorry for the inconvenience” just doesn’t make up for the damage it incurs (indemnity). Further, there’s no known metric of the automated heuristics at which EAC acts upon so we can be made aware of potential activities that can get flagged a suspicious activity.

The fact that EAC is being used in high end competitions is reassuring but the number of hours it used for official competition compared to the number of hours it is used for everyday gaming is insignificant if you compare consequences on both situations. Further, the number of anomalous activities in high end competitions does not compare with those findings in everyday gaming (think about the shame players will get when they get caught in such competition). The high end competitive scene might as well provide their own hardware that players cannot significantly alter to keep all players in equal footing.

Enigmaplatypus has a valid point as other apps that allows plugins are vulnerable to abuse and unless they are in a whitelist, they have the potential to be flagged by the heuristic algorithm.

(Nail) #12

they use it with Counter Strike and Quake Live so most likely well whitelisted

I’m concerned about Mumble.

As far as I remember, the anti cheat used in CS bans people for using Mumble crosshairs iirc?

Does this mean we’re going to have to delete the Mumble folder and crap before the new anti-cheat goes live and that Mumble crosshairs will no longer be allowed until that new feature shoe posted about makes its way in to the game?

I swear I can’t go back to having no crosshair while ADS’ing any more. If they change the anti cheat and then take months to implement that “keep crosshair while ADS’ing” option then I probably just wont play.

I only ask because I don’t want to update DB, log in to play and then get banned for having Mumble open.

(Wolf_Darkrose) #14

EAC is a interesting anti cheat but if im right it depends on how the studio using the system works.

Pretty dumb people even have to rely on Mumble for that anyway… How hard would it be to have an option to keep the crosshair visible while ADS? Its also a slight advantage to anyone using the Mumble crosshair vs someone having no crosshair. Hope they fix that soon.

there’s a bit more about this on reddit

(GatoCommodore) #17

you know what i use when im used to play CS 1.6?

i put a small piece of glow in the dark tape om my monitor.

works just like putting mumble overlay dot

(K1X455) #18

We used to use a marked cellophane back when the crosshair meant something in 1.6 and the Arctic Warfare Magnum would shoot true to the crosshair and not some random shot in the circle. That meant versatility for the sniper who run with and use it as a shotgun.

I still do the same thing in the TomClancy’s The Division where most semi-auto sniper could be hip fired without undue non-scoping penalty.

(DankBeretField) #19

Next time, they should use BattlEye as an anticheat. It’s pretty effective in my opinion.

Look at Unturned.

Thanks for the info!

However, I’m still worried. I don’t see either Logitech gaming software or plays.tv recording client in this list:
support.easyanticheat.net/kb/privacy/?lr=en-us

EDIT: I use macros for quickchat commands like “medic” “ammo” and “thanks” and a couple taunts. Would be stupid if I get banned for that
