possible to map in 3ds MAX?

hi there,

I was wondering if it is possible to do the mapping in 3ds max? and if it is, then will we (somehow) import it in radiant and do the additional stuff like spawnpoints and stuff? and how is that possible? thnx in advance.

I think it is in a way. In fact, in earlier discussions, the SD developers had talked about building Goldrush in max, then possibly exporting to ASE. Can’t remember the entire discussion though.

yes it’s very much possible to build the entire map in max and export it to radiant.
The only 2 minor problems are

  1. You would have to build a caulk hull because the models will not block vis by themselves. This is not really a problem because a lot of mappers do this anyway since it gives you much more control over vis.
  2. you’d have to do a lot of clipping(or just autoclip it, even though I find “manual” clipping is a lot more efficient and reliable).

I think the best thing is to use a combination of both max and radiant. Personally i find radiant is much faster and easier to work with when it comes to “blocky” geometry, things like buildings and other structures that are build mainly out of 6 sided brushes at right angles.
Max is much easier to work with for “irregular” meshes, things that have a lot of small detail and require some vertex tweaking. Also terrain can sometimes be easier to make in Max.

I wouldnt bother mapping in 3dmax my self, you would have to clip every thing and take twice as long as it would using radiant on its own. Max is good for making custom modells for ET but mapping in it would take time.

Hmmm, I seem to remember that the creator of Saberpeak created his terrain in 3DSMax and then used Radiant for the other things…

He made a few of the mountain sides modeeeeels.

For my map “v1rocket” I used a program called Bryce5 for creating the terrain.I extracted the heightmap and used that in easygen…worked great

i used to make levels in an plugin for max that would let you draw lines with the 2d function of max and then it would extrude that to make the right stuff. worked ok, but now that i can do radiant i wouldnt go back, im still making my models in max tho. for terrain i like nem’s terrain generator

sorry i revived this old post i thought i was going to find the link for that plugin but i didnt :frowning:
