positioning of mg42s and other guns

(BaronBlabla) #1

When I select an mg42 (misc_mg42), a red box will pop-up. The positioning of these things kills my time, quite some of them are located on in the most impossible places. I now have to test them and move them everytime, is there another way of doing this so you will actually see the model? (I don’t use tripods) The same for normal guns.

Another question, misc_landmine. What will it exactly do? I want to lay down a minefield with mines which won’t go away when you walk over them, and they should be invisible. And they should explode after 1.5 seconds, even if you still stand on them.

Well, one trick I use when placing MG’s and I’m not sure which direction its going to face, is to create a spawn entity because it has a little white arrow showing the face direction. I check the degree its facing by selecting it and pressing “n” and apply the same level of degree in my MG gun.

But there is also an arrow on the mg entity…

That’s all okay, it doesn’t matter now where it is facing to, the problem is always the height…

Not on my mg entity there isn’t o.o

Yea, for direction of the mg, place a spawn(or path_corner) and set the angles in that, you won’t see the arrow in the misc_mg42 box unfortunately. But you can see the arrow with the spawn, set your angle, so you can see where it will actually point, then use the same angle x x x key in the misc_mg42 entity. Just remember to delete the spawn once you’re done with it. :stuck_out_tongue:

I’m not absolutely sure, but I remember reading that misc_landmine’s spawn at the map start as if an engineer planted it, and they do count towards that teams total allowed mine count.

For the height of the mg, you want 5units below the top of the entity in a side view. I got bored and started playing with photoshop for a few minutes.

You can see in the bottom pic the different heights I was testing, and 5 units seemed to look the best.(far left in pic)

Thanks dude! About the misc_mg42’s angle, I don’t know what radiant you use, but I CAN see the arrow…

BTW, I still don’t know how to get yourself into 3rd person…

EDIT: I got a new problem, why can’t I put my mg through a mesh??? I used bevels for the front of my bunker you see…

bind UPARROW "cycle cg_thirdpersonrange 10000 -10000 40"
bind DOWNARROW "cycle cg_thirdpersonrange -10000 10000 40"
bind LEFTARROW "cycle cg_thirdpersonangle 359 0 5"
bind RIGHTARROW "cycle cg_thirdpersonangle 0 359 5"

bind KP_END cg_thirdperson "0"
bind KP_PGDN cg_thirdperson "1"

there’s alot of good developer configs in the pak0.pk3 too, lotta good stuff.

I’m still using gtkRadiant 1.4.0(I like the mouse click+shift to select/copy textures) So you got the angles figured out, eh?

For your mesh texture you might need to have “surfaceparm nonsolid” in your shader if the gun absolutely has to be there… You’re probably getting “stuck” in the mesh when you mount the gun, it can happen :frowning:

-Start with just moving the gun closer to the edge where you’ll be standing. You could only be a couple units shy. Heh heh, are you testing in a small box? Or recompiling the whole map to check one gun :o

So, you’re telling me to take the texture I have used now, put it in my own texture folder (and rename it of course), and then edit the .shader file?
And after that I’ll just us a clip…

But the error was a leaking entity…???

(S14Y3R) #9

Yep. Except you can just write your own shader for any textures in the pak0 too  (If thats what you did), but ya, you got the idea of it. And with any luck that will stop the “entity leak” you’re talking about now too.

(BaronBlabla) #10

what if you tick ‘high’?

(S14Y3R) #11

that’s more for when your on the gun, it allows you to shoot down to a closer radius, like when shooting from a higher balcony.
