Popularizing Brink for eSports/Competitive Community

:stuck_out_tongue: don’t bring attention Donkey! We’re having a good time here lol. But what you say is right, i can’t imagine thinking otherwise which deters me from posting places that get you flamed, not worth it lol.

WOAH you guys are telling me didn’t like flyers at Qcon even though every prior comp mod had them taken out!? lol that was hilarious. “Ah we’re losing, anyone know how to fly? No…”

(DonkeyDong) #22

heeeey laaa heeey laaaaaaaaa blah blah blah blah

(Weapuh) #23

I’m still not sexting you… :stuck_out_tongue:

(DonkeyDong) #24

You did notice I said ‘Plural’…

I’m sure Hardup or Bmxer will give me lovin

I’ve watched competitive gaming on TV before, and it is really really boring. I emailed a buddy of mine about it when I watched it. I think I still have that email at work; I’ll post it here if it is relevant…

I’m not saying that to poo-poo the idea. It just needs to be refined and improved dramatically.

(Weapuh) #26

Well it’s like any other form of entertainment, TV for example, most of it is REALLY REALLY boring, most youtube videos, and most games also terrible. People still make them though. I remember though when the infrastructure was there there were certain individuals greasedscotsman for one, who could make it really exciting.

Just saying if there are people out there devoted to making it into entertainment, I hope they have sufficient tools provided to do so

I personally prefer 5v5 for competitive play, would be great for SD to have one of the popular eSports to cover Brink. Would help tremendously with advertisement.

(hobodefcon) #28

basically an article about how starcraft 2 is a great spectator game from gdc. Emphasizes things like observable degrees of success. Starcraft 2 I think is the best game from a spectators perspective. I dont think the meta-game is highlighted in that article, but I believe that explaining the meta-game via commentary is a great way to enhance the experience when watching a game.

What game did you watch on “TV”? When mylittleloveslave/donkeydong says “TV” he means BrinkTV, not television.
There have been CS games played on TV and it always ends up failing because they try to make it so anyone’s grandparents will know what is going on. 3rd person views only, lame commentators, etc. Sounds like what you are talking about…
The real deal is stuff like ESL.tv, gamescast.tv, quake-live.tv, etc. Shoutcasters streaming matches live online is where its at!
Check out some of the stuff that just went down at the Cebit ESL world finals. There were some epic and very exciting matches with really good commentating. Maybe not for grandma and maybe not on cable tv but this is the kind of stuff we are talking about when we say “TV”.

Games like ETQW, Quake, CS, ET, etc all have support for “TV” functionality. Viewers load up the game and join a “TV” server and watch the match live, in person, in game… all while listening to a casters. Check out gamestv.org if you have ET installed. Its pretty sick.

BrinkTV FTW!:stroggbanana:

From 2007:

This was on DirecTV, and I think they sponsored the league. They also showed people playing FIFA (one person on each team was competitive at FIFA), and some other games that I totally forget now.

How do you make a FPS consistently fun to watch? If you follow one guy, there’s a good chance something cool is going happen somewhere else. If you have free cam view, doesn’t quite capture the skill of someone lining up a headshot, controlling their recoil with burst shots. Also, the camera doesn’t want fast and shaky, makes it hard to watch.

Best bet is probably free cam or 3rd person view, with multiple people casting and calling out where the action is. I’d like to see someone make highlights out of the replays too.

If shooters were to be broadcasted on tv, I think replays are the way to go, more control and easier to highlight the action.

(Herandar) #32

Splitscreens and multiple free camera angles.

I hope Splash Damage will respond positively

Well the original point, how do you make it fun? By putting the fun and control INTO the viewers hands. Quake Wars was the best example with QuakeWars TV Servers. Viewers can load up into a TV server, and then click 1 button to rotate through all the players, another to go ‘free mode’ say when you find you’re favorite lovedominatrix/bmxer. All the while you have that awesome shoutcasters like Greased Scottsman AND Matt Richards doing there thing

(hobodefcon) #35

True that, but I was referring though to the post about watching css on television. My fault, I should of quoted.

I kinda felt with quake wars tv, when ever the commentators like, whoa! that was awesome!, if I weren’t already watching it, it would be, damn I missed that. Works both ways too, sometimes I saw something I thought was interesting but the commentators didn’t catch it. But in regards for the best experience live? I agree with you.

My sci-fi idea is that in the future, the camera will be controlled with A.I, watching a live game and broadcasting it with like a 1-2 minutes delay so it can figure all the best parts and the best view. For Brink 3 maybe? lol im kidding.

(Nail) #36

possibly after original shoutcast, a server side demo could be used like a movie, edited to all the good stuff with commentary and keep the flow maybe even with splitscreen

(Weapuh) #37

shoutcasts done over replays usually don’t miss much. It’s just time consuming, just needs a little planning not just hop on random match and narrate what’s going on well casted game is pretty dramatic. Given histories of players, rivalries, pointing out mistakes as well as skill, knowledge of strategies ect.

Shoutcasting a objective based game is a lot more fun, I can’t watch more than 1 minute of those Qlive TDM stuff, so boring.

(Cankor) #38

I still load up the ETQW VODs every once in awhile and watch them. also loved (not like Donkey and BMXer use the word though) guys like BMXer who would consistently post their demos.

(coolstory) #39

links? I tried watching etqw games on youtbue…but it made no sense to me…

(Cankor) #40

You can Download ETQW comp VODs here

None of these are on youtube, quality would suffer plus they are probably too long.

If you’re not familiar with ETQW you can get an overview of the original maps and objectives here:
