Pleasure of having private servers and what it does!

Hey everyone! As you can see in the picture we have 30 people playing PUG games. :stroggbanana:

The reason why I did this post is that I hope we can keep the servers, and keep arranging PUGs or scrims. What we have done before is, we have tried to arrange games before hand so that we don’t have to wait in queue for 3 hours before some other teams queue up, there’s just not enough teams playing actively and people don’t want to solo queue so PUG’s are pretty much the only way to go. Having passworded servers up all the time makes it a lot easier and more convenient for every person involved.

I think we should be able have both competitive matchmaking and private servers. Competitive matchmaking would be amazing with rank / league system, especially when you play with your team. Private servers would be used for pick up games or arranging scrims.

The more we play in competitive environment, the better feedback we can give for the developers. PUGs at the moment are the most reliable way to get 5 vs 5 going for the reasons stated above. This is like two birds with one stone. It’s essential to have both options available for a game to grow!

Thank you for reading this.

Private servers are essential in keeping private scrims and pugs a thing. Matchmaking, only offers players the ability to queue up and grind to get their rank as high as they want. Pugs also are essential in growing a helpful, friendly, and close community of players. I’ve seen it happen in Tribes Ascend; the pug mumble there was the central hub for the competitive scene: We ran new player pugs, high level pugs, workshops for roles, draft tournaments, and much much more. Without the pug scene (and private servers) Tribes wouldn’t have been able to exist for the short amount of time that it did. However, I can say that tribes didn’t get to grow further, because it didn’t have ranked matchmaking like all popular games have now a days.

TL:DR - You need both private servers and competitive matchmaking. Player-owned servers would not effect a well made match making system (look at CS:GO, competitive mm is the staple produce of the game currently, despite it being so much more new than player-owned servers).

Since our competitive scene is so small right now, I believe that the pug community should get 4 servers (2 East coast, and 2 Euro) in order to help introduce people to competitive dirty bomb, however, I still believe that competitive matchmaking could still be much more popular, as people (like myself) love to grind their rank out.

If only there were a system by which you can get automatically grouped into matches… :stroggtapir:

I’m sure you are aware of comp matchmaking, but it’s not the same as private servers. It’s like you tried to say that ESEA pugs should run over matchmaking or not at all.

(Protekt1) #5

I’d much rather see matchmaking work well than see private servers for pugs at this point. I have nothing against PUGs and I think they are fine, but matchmaking is much preferable, especially in the long term. You just get into games faster and they there is ranking as well so you find more evenly matched games, when it is working properly that is.

rip, they didnt feel like letting us keep them, guess they’ll keep removing them and readding them every week

I don’t understand one very simple thing. Why is it so extremely hard for SD/Nexon to keep the private servers up? I mean, teams are even offering to pay for servers. It’s mind blowing how a game “shaped by gamers” is denied something as simple as private servers. The difference between ~50 and ~54 servers must be bugging someone.

)insert rant about Nexon paying as little as possible(

(BMXer) #9

We need both. Match making is going to happen. Its a work in progress that will take some time to get dial in. We need private servers for PUGs, tourneys, and for practice. Teams can’t even run around on an empty server at this point!

My team and I are more than happy to pay for a server. Take my money.

I just want a server where I can go practice the jumps, search for shooting/crossfire angles, predictable nade throws, good spots for the heartbeat monitor…things like that. I haven’t even taken this game seriously and mostly avoided all pugs/MM because I prefer to know these things before I even try to compete against anybody. Having a server that lets me or a group of people do this would be amazing and it’s something that every other game that I’ve ever played and competed in has…but not DB.

I agree that I’d rather see matchmaking improvements and making it more interesting, but every competitive game I played there is private servers or some kind of lobby mechanic so we can arrange scrims / pugs etc.

If they can give us servers every week or two for tournaments, why can’t we use the same servers for making bigger PUG / Competitive community, it’s good way to team up with other players and play the game with friendly-fire on.

(yakcyll) #12

Just so everybody is on the same page here, the server binaries have been confirmed to be in the works during one of the recent (month?) community streams and are not out yet due to things requiring a bit more polishing (I would suppose that credit handling was prone to abuse), so hold on tight. Pretty sure SD realize that the sooner they release them, the better.

(Nail) #13

I hope I’m wrong but I don’t see binaries being public ever, renting servers is a different deal, they certainly should be available by release if not open beta (better)

edit" I think part of the prob is establishing a UI that can’t be abused but still allows people to set up a game they want, FF on, limited mercs etc.

Well of course we need private servers, eventually. Sooner the better for at least testing purposes to flesh it out and everything.

But on the other hand, we still need a healthy ranked ladder or whatever they are going with. This is why games like hearthstone and CSGO are so successful, they have quick matchmaking in a ranked system.

Holy crap, if this is true then it’s a massive announcement, can you link to a source on this?

Or as I suspect it’s more likely a case of Nexon misunderstanding the question, or you misunderstanding the response. For example we ask about server binaries and they hear private servers.

Somebody definitely has their wires crossed here, there is no imminent release of server binaries planned.

As for the scrim/PUG server suggestions, I’ll bring it up with people and see if there is something we can do in the short term.

(yakcyll) #17

Must’ve misunderstood it then. Sorry for the confusion!

(OenX) #18

There are many reasons to provide DirtyCups with permanent private servers but there are also many complications. I’m certain the devs would love to have us pugging on private servers all the time, and we are discussing things with them to make sure this happens. For now, though, we’ll just have to deal with the minor inconvenience. I promise Splash Damage wants exactly what we do.

Before long, we’ll be enjoying the advantages of private servers again, boys & girls. Try to be optimistic.

(Kroad) #19

so i thought we had these secured when those 2 servers were added last week, guess not huh
