@Shifty and Loffy

This is the article that I got my impression from. It was posted on the SD/Warchest page a while back. In case you have not read it yet.

I would have gone with “Enemy Territory: Extraction” :D, tho this is not ET4.
In it’s current state is as close to ET as Twilight to Blade so i welcome the rename, a clean slate to start over without the “From the makers of…”. I need to stop thinking of this game as a successor of W:ET and more as a Kongregate game
Making a game for the pc on the Rad formula will bring you the cash and some fame, tho i doubt it will be remembered 10 years from now.
As long as you stick to your word and release the SDK and allow some community generated content integration with your game their is still hope…
Good news! The King is Dead! Long live the King! :infiltrator:

SDK is still on?

I never played W:ET; that was way, way before I even started playing games on the PC. I only watched a couple YT vids of it. But I think I can say for a fact, that the thing with “being remembered 10 years from now” is highly subjective. I’d even go so far to state, that not even 1% of the world wide gaming community knows, that that game even existed.

But to a regular W:ET player, who still loves the game’s gameplay mechanic, it might appear as if the whole world is only waiting for a 2nd W:ET, or ET:QW. But to be profitable in the long run you have to appeal to people who never played those games. Just try to imagine the costs of something like DB; there’s no way to make a profit out of this game if it would only attract former ET players, especially because they are quite a bit older than the actual target-group* and because of their age they might be a bit more hesitant to buy all this cosmetic stuff; if at all. It’s mostly 15-25 year olds who are prone to spend RL-money for proverbial hats.

*(only my guess though; like everything above^)

WOW on the name change, but everytime I say “Dirty Bomb” my friends think about a porn movie … so this might be a good idea after all

Extraction sounds a bit … simple, not to say simplisic. May I suggest that you take this opportunity to consider all options ? (not that I have to say this, but I do it anyway ^^)

Well I just don’t understand that logic. Why does a game become less appealing? (why does a popular game from 10 years ago not stand a chance today?)

The only thing I can think of is that gameplay constantly evolves adding new stuff etc, but in that case you could still transfer the core gameplay and build on that (as other franchises have done)

Also I think 1% is a bit over exaggerated. Maybe only a smallish percentage has actually played the game, but I think quite a lot of people know what it is.

I am a regular W:ET player and I don’t think that the whole world is waiting for W:ET 2, but I do think it could catch on if a similar game is released. Why? Seems like every few years somebody grabs a very old thing, mixes it up and releases it as something new. This hasn’t happened for W:ET yet, even though W:ET has known some success in the past. Therefore my hope was that SD might take a stab at it, them being the original devs and all… This was initally reinforced by the class / objective gameplay, remake of maps & F2P title. But as the alpha has progressed it has steadily moved away from this instead of moving towards it so at this point I don’t think it’s going to happen.

I’m on the fence about it though since if they do try to make a remake people are going to be constantly comparing it to W:ET and trying to get more stuff from W:ET into the game (as we have seen).

It’s not like an ET 2 would only appeal to former ET players.

Anyway the ET genre is dead. I still think it could have been an hit, but we will never now.

Why did this topic turn into discussion about W:ET?

Let’s spam Treyarch forums (if there are any) to make MP for W:TNO (as pointless as chatting here because ZeniMax/Bethesda has rights to the title).

(.Chris.) #49

It never was.

(stealth6) #50

There was a topic at some point where Locki said they were going to try and make it happen.

EDIT: It was a sticky, but I noticed it disappeared a while ago. Here’s the topic that led up to it though:

I know about that but no where does it say that the SDK is happening just that they’d like to which sounds all too familiar.

I’m perhaps being a bit of a grumpy guts here but a lot of what’s been said about custom content and editing tools were said during the run up to Brink’s release, back then I even asked Locki about editing at some event in Leeds during a short Q&A, he said pretty much the same as what was posted early on in the Alpha here, it’s something they would like to do but it’s not that straight forward. I know there were no promises made but things sounded just as promising back then as they do now, I starting making plans and block outs and even started work with someone tinkering with ET:QW to get a powerball/domination mod going that could be ported, needless to say it was all for nothing. I just hope the people doing all the blockouts for DB aren’t doing the same.

I know things are different now as there’s no external publisher involved and such but there still going to have to find the funding, man power and time to get those tools done and for custom content to be integrated into the game, the very same issues a publisher would have to consider, albeit from a different perspective. Plus there’s the added complication of making it compatible with the F2P model and that.

EDIT: Least they have never flat out lied about an SDK like that dude who did the PR for Wolf09, forget his name now? Sokal or something?

(iwound) #52

They are trying to hire someone to make an SDK.

(rookie1) #53

…this^^

Must have missed that one, good news

(iwound) #56

i have my sources. cough twitter cough.
although the tweet has now gone or i cant find it, or i dreamt it.

I think you may have dreamt it. The SDK is almost certainly something we’d do ourselves if we have the time and resources. Chris pretty much summed it up, we’d very much like to support custom content creation but SDKs require a lot of work and time to produce, so we can’t always do them.

(RasteRayzeR) #58

But as for the first time you make a game that will provide continuous support, it is both possible and a must :oppressor:

(iwound) #59

[narrows eyes] mmm. i did see something along the lines of sdk tools programmer.
i thought it strange sdk was added to the tweet. i know your asking for tool programmers. probably a typo.
i took a screenie but didnt post.
but yes i could be mistaken.

That’s probably for a tools programmer able to work with other SDKs, as we use a lot ourselves for things like middleware etc
