I’ve started only using the server browser to find games. There are a couple problems with the quick join feature right now. Firstly, there’s team balancing. It seems that the game just adds people to a server without taking into consideration the skill of the players. Secontly, there’s the fact that it’s not at all uncommon to get people who don’t even live on the same continent as the server connecting to it, causing high ping. With the state of lag compensation, this can result in some pretty bullshit kills.
Please either fix quick join or remove it
1st point. Correct. It handles balancing between matches, not when searching for matches. It considers finding a game as a priority. Do you experience an improvement in balance when you manually select a server? It is essentially the same process quick join uses so I am unsure if it would be ‘better’ in that regard. It’s casual. If you are looking for a mode where they attempt to matchmake based on skill you can try ranked.
2nd point. Yes, that can happen. It tries to keep the ping under a certain amount based on your settings but mistakes can happen and sometimes there isn’t a better option(SOMETIMES, not all the time. Sometimes it also just chucks you into a server that has a slot and doesn’t worry about the rest). So I can understand this one a bit more than the first.
It definitely has some issues, however I don’t think balance should be involved in quick join. In the end it is still ‘quick’ join and won’t think for very long about balance, which may cause more issues then it fixes, especially when you get down to team balance and which team has an opening on it as well. It gets complex fast.
Would be nice to have a join that looks for a skilled match. Not as much as ranked, but where it prioritises skill a bit more.
Exactly. I play a game to have fun, and stomping the enemy or getting stomped isn’t that much fun. A good, hard fight, now that’s fun! I don’t think it’d be too much to ask to take skill into consideration when at least putting people on a team.
we just need more level separations.
SD was very against level separations, and finally conceded to put some minlvl10 servers as an experiment. Which became a huge success and the only way to play pubs for most DB veterans I know, myself included. I think I would drop DB completely if I had to play with/against the sublvl10 crowd.
Frankly the lvl10 crowd is getting increasingly scrubbish, people with lvl12-13 repairing simultaneously, getting long spawned like total noobs, using ironsights when uncalled for, completely missing when reviving or hell not noticing that a revive/ammo is needed in the first place, etc.
Imo give us more min/max lvl separation servers; or even better yet: give us ‘hardcore’ servers with rank requirements (bronze only, silver only, gold only, cobalt only) with friendly fire and collision!

I talked about this when min level 10 was implemented. It just holds back the tide. Players with low skill will continue to rise in level until more servers are needed. It isn’t a real solution. As for breaking it out by rank that would be tough as well unless they did like a Silver and under then a Gold and up. Even then it is ridiculously easy to get to gold. When they reintroduce 5v5s it will be even easier.
Breaking apart the playerbase further isn’t the way to do business imo. Just makes it harder to find a game without the promise of actual balance. Just arbitrary balance that can be beaten by point farming(casual aura) or noobstomping(ranked). Not to mention people could just throw ranked games to play against worse players.
I think the best case scenario is community servers where users can set their own limits and access rather than some decision brought down by SD.

Agree entirely, except for the last part about needing a rank to use those servers haha. I’ve only played 2 or 3 ranked games in my entire d.bomb time and that isn’t from lack of trying. Before the last update Australia had a dead ranked scene and after the last update it was even more dead as we were required to play on North American servers with 300ms ping. So I’ve never had a rank before, and probably never will, even though I’m level 43 with 300 hours game time.
I would like to see some higher min level servers though. 10 is nothing, honestly. Like you said, I still see people who are level 15-20 who don’t drop ammo, don’t revive, have 2/25 k/d’s, no general awareness and do the most retarded things ever like having 3 people repairing the EV at the same time, pushing into open areas when they can clearly see an incoming enemy Skyhammer strike right in front of them, not touching the objective for 2-3 minutes when it’s sitting on the ground and they have plenty of time to deliver it because the enemy team is dead etc. I could honestly start making a list of the plebbery I see in game and still be typing in 3 hours time.
Rarely do I see people over level 20 doing these kind of things though. I’d love to see some minimum level 20 servers or something higher than 10.
inb4 levels mean nothing. I know that. I know that not everyone with low level is a pleb. My friend who is only level 13 is nearly as good as me but I’m generalising here.
…

I remember quite vividly when level gated servers came up the first time here that I argued exactly that. If the majority of highlevel players sits behind the gate, lowlevel players will learn the game slower since the leading examples are missing, stumbling into the level 10 servers with not much more knowledge than a level 1 and a level 5 before hand.
Anyways I do admit that I’m also playing 100% on the min level 10 servers right now. Partially to keep what little skill level I have.
I wouldn’t mind if “Hardcore” servers would exist tho because of point 1. I would be against rank limits. But servers with ff on and a big fat red warning in the name that informs you that it is on. Would imo be enough to keep less skilled / people just wanting to have fun without pressure away.
Would remove the min level 10 and max level 5 servers tho.
Or go with the time, declare the server browser model obsolete and switch to a quickjoin - casual ladder matchmaking model. As is standard nowadays.
while you learn faster against tougher opponents i wouldnt overestimate that capacity for learning over simple gaming experience. Not unless someone sits down with you and points out your mistakes and explains why.
Above all those subtle gaming secrets, like knowing how to play as a team/push against spawn/when to attack and when to run away, there is a plethora of pure game basics: knowing the mercs and the maps, recognizing strengths and weaknesses, movement, aim, etc. These are primarily individually acquired, rather than by getting slaughtered by better players.
I had the reverse situation when picking up DB: i knew the gamestyle immediately from previous SD games but I didn’t know all the mercs/abilities/maps. Didn’t need anyone to point them out to me, these things just come to you as you play.
Imo a lvl5 player will not learn much from a minvll10 crowd. Except to avoid the game with ‘p2w shit balance’. Once they get to that lvl10 and know some basics they are more likely to benefit from better skilled players.
Lets take that one step further: simply minlvl20 servers for those that really understand the game.
Like @rancid said, you rarely see lvl20s missing out on the basics, even if their aim sucks; they might play a medic and actually revive you when needed, rather than shoot some far-off opponent while standing on a slowly arming proxy mine that a runby proxy just threw in their face.
I’d also like to see stopwatch removed from the non-ranked modes. I think it would be a way to help increase the number of people queueing up for competitive. However, I’d also like to see 7v7 competitive.
wut ? forcing people who want to play stopwatch to play Ranked? No. No. No. oh and No.

Objective is the same thing. Only one half.
Objective is just a frenzied rush to complete objectives, so you’ll have more noobs trying to suicide complete objectives as proxy or something.
Stopwatch is a little more complex, since you are competing against the progress of the other team rather than trying to always complete all the objectives.
Update, currently in a US East server with the majority of the players connected to it living in South America…This is some bullshit.
What does this have to do with the thread topic? Most people from SA ping better to US East servers at the moment because the SA servers were moved to Miami.
You can say poor me all you want, but they are the ones without servers in their region…
