Please don't release any more achievements "play for 20 hours with x merc in your squad"

(frostyvampire) #1

It feels more annoying and makes you think “I need to have this merc in my squad for the achievement” than an actual achievement.

The 30 minutes one is fine, heck even the 5 hours is not too bad. But 20 hours is just way too much and it’s just annoying.

So please, for the next mercs, don’t add a 20 hours achievement. And if you do, then add it to all mercs with a special reward. Maybe a chibi trinket of that merc, or a trinket with their gadget/ability (mini SNITCH for Aimee, mini health station for Aura, etc.). But then it needs to be an achievement for every merc and not just new ones.

tl;dr: title

Edit: Oh yeah and the “craft a cobalt” card should be removed as well. You can replace it with “obtain a silver or better” (special edition counts too) if you really want to encourage people to get a card for the new mercs, but a cobalt is ridiculous.

I really like the idea of ability trinkets, though I think it should be considerably more hours- it’s something you’ll eventually get instead of grinding it on purpose.

I do agree on the original point, having achievements just for time with the new mercs feels like a cheap attempt at making a bunch of achievements.

Agreed, although the cobalt ones annoy me more. Before Guardian, the only achievement I hadn’t unlocked was the one that required you to have every loadout rarity for Turtle. Sorry, I don’t like him enough to waste that much money or credits on a cobalt I’ll likely never use just for an achievement.

(Sorotia) #4

I don’t really care either way to be honest…I got the 20 hours on Javelin but I’ve yet to get the 20 hours on Turtle.

I’ll probably have the 20 hours on Guardian before I do on Turtle. Not like the achievements are mandatory or of limited duration.

I still hold to the idea that there should be achievements for completing specific things with a Merc. Like “block X amount of damage with Turtle’s shield” or “get a quad kill with one Fragger nade” etc. Then have a special Merc skin for completing all of the challenges for that Merc. That would keep me busy for WEEKS.

I think they are good. Maybe add more some really difficult ones? I dont have them all, but I dont mind. It’s there just for reminder.

One good achievement could be win 10 stopwatch streak.

Difficult achievements are nice, but they will mostly be based on luck. I’d like it though.

No, I was thinking more about stuff like “wipe the entire enemy with a single AoE blast” (aimed at Skyhammer) or “kill 3 enemies with a single sniper bullet”

I wish I could smash the agree button 10 times for this.

I hate these achievements. I get they want people to try the merc, but people do that anyways, just look at the old mercs. I want achievements that are actual achievements, not just copy/paste “waste fragments and credits on a merc you hate to craft a card you probably won’t use”
Hell, at least make them more active achievements. “play for 20 hours” sounds tedious af compared to “block 1,000 shots as turtle”, something you’d do naturally while playing turtle, or something else like @hawkeyeguy99 mentioned.

A lot of the badges could be converted into achievements as well. 20 melee kills, 50 kills in one round, certain medic accolades, etc. But what do I care? My profile is private. I used to like to compete in the achievement dick measuring contests back when I actually cared about games and went for 100% completion a lot, but I don’t have time for that anymore. I only ever bother with achievements nowadays if they reward you with some sort of in-game item or something to decorate our Steam profiles with like backgrounds and yada-yada.

It’s just something fun to aim for if you’ve done everything else. You don’t have to do them, it’s optional. Hell, you don’t even have to display them. I have something like 300 people added on my public steam profile, a lot of them are super into achievements too, but I’ve never felt pressured to unlock things. I unlocked them because I wanted to, not to feature them on my profile.
However, I know some people like being completionistic too, so why not have decent achievements instead of the crap we have now?

Like Starry said, achievements are here for fun. They are something to aim for when you already unlocked all the mercs and stuff. Nobody cares what achievements you have, but it’s something for you to try, they are called achievements because you achieve them.
This is also why I hate noobs that think they are cool because they use achievement hacks. They just ruin the fun for themselves and it just shows their ego. Volvo please do something about it

Playing 20 hours with a wasted merc slot and wasting 20,000 fragments + 50,000 credits on a useless card just doesn’t feel rewarding, I just don’t feel like I achieved something by getting them. If anything I feel relief that I can finally remove that merc from my squad and that I have 1 less merc that I don’t have a cobalt for.

The sad thing is that these achievements don’t even accomplish that.

Now if you would actually have to play the merc instead of only having them in your squad it would be different. Playing a merc - even if you don’t excel at it - makes you better understand the role they add to the team and also helps you support/counter/avoid this merc when you play something else.

For this the duration should be reduced though. Playing a merc for 5 hours should be enough to get the gist.

you don’t even need to play with them. My squad is turtle+javelin+guardian at the moment

But if your squad is Turtle, Javelin, Guardian, then you are forced to play 1 of them at all times

As I said, you currently only need them in your squad. I was suggesting that achievements for playing them would be more useful for growing a mature player base that can work together in different roles.
