Shadowrun did this. A lot of people still play it, I think. It was a lot of fun, too.
Playing consoles
Quake 3 on the Dreamcast was awesome, a lot of PC players ran servers for DC as well.
I don’t think a lot of people EVER played Shadowrun. I’m pretty sure it was a huge commercial flop and a massive embarrassment for for Microsoft.
The problem is tho… it was kind of similiar to Brink.
It had races instead of body types and you could have abilities that would deplete a certain meter etc.
It basically had only multiplayer (sp was with bots), 8 maps (something like that) and 2 modes… It was slammed for having little content. Although Brink’s mode is actually kind of original (if compare it to other current-gen titles, not SD’s previous games).
Well, yes, that’s a fair point. The problem is, Shadowrun wasn’t a new IP. It was an IP with a ton of backstory that nobody knew, it had limited choice of weapon (which anyone will tell you is like 60% of the reason that people play FPS games, for whatever reason), and it apparently had a ton of criticism for the price. Which is to say, the same price we’re paying for games until this day.
I knew I had to add “successful” into that sentence for someone would debate this. So this is the one and ONLY example? So it’s safe to say it’s still true. Believing a game with the same name on all 3 platforms all interact with each other is an unreasonable assumption for anyone who knows anything about video games.
I also haven’t heard any discrepencies between consoles. I think most devs nowadays try to make it pretty equal so they don’t get accused of fanboying and get blacklisted by certain die-hard console lovers.
Cross-platform PS3-Xbox360 will 99% probably never happen. Xbox Live costs money, PS3 is free, and they are in direct competition of each other. By opening up cross platforms, you’ve eliminated the need for a PS3 player to buy an Xbox to play with his buddy on Live, and vice versa.
This cross platform gaming has happened before on final fantasy 11
Final fantasy 11 was a game allowing cross platform gaming from xbox ps3 and pc
… which was a flop that everyone hated. Are we not communicating about “it’s not been done successfully before?”
Time will tell with regards to Portal 2, though. I think that might just make it.
According to the Dungeon Defenders developers, I should say. I don’t know the specific reason why although I have some idea.
