Playin' Dirty for the first time in 10 years

(Fenixp) #1

Just wanted to pop in to say that Dirty Bomb is incredible. I used to play Counter Strike: Source all the way back around its release for about a year, original CS before that, HL: Deadmatch and Unreal Tournament before that. However, I played far too much of Unreal and Counter-Strike, to the point where I got bored with them, and I never really got into quake, so … I wasn’t left with much that I knew of, really. So I became exclusively SP gamer. Actually, I decided to try out Team Fortress 2, but that was around the time they introduced hats so I quickly lost interest.

Fastforward to watching some TotalBiscuit’s videos where he covers Dirty Bomb. After seeing them, I thought “That’s something that looks like I could enjoy, but it’s online multiplayer, so who cares.” but the game sort of remained on my radar. About two weeks ago I got a craving to play an FPS, but it being my favorite genre, I have played pretty much all the noteworthy SP stuff and thought “Hey, Dirty Bomb is free, let’s try that” and … Holy crap, in spite of having a bunch of games in progress when I decided to give it a shot, it started occupying most of my gaming time. In two weeks I have already clogged over 10 hours into the damn thing and while it doesn’t sound like much, it’s quite rare for me. A mix between TF2 and Counter-Strike with fun movement system, high skill ceiling and fair business model? What is there not to like! I’m having a great time with the game.

I’m essentially writing this as a big thanks to the devs and community which made it possible for me to get back into online FPS games. Also as an apology - I didn’t play on this level for ages, I suck :stuck_out_tongue: Well, I got kind of decent at healing people, learning to play Sparks now and having a blast with her.

Eh, while I’m at it, I’ve actually got questions:
a) Competitive mode. Will I ruin the game of everyone and their mother if I just try it out or should I stick to casual?
b) Is the counter-strike explosion thingy mode going to get more maps?

A) Right now Competitive is not that great because not many people play it, making the matchmaking pretty poor and giving you long wait times while it tries to find matches. I also hear there are a good number of cheaters in Competitive.

B) More maps are in development, although they haven’t said if they are for any specific modes. The latest updates have given hints to the new maps, and if you poke around Youtube you can find videos of people checking out the new maps in greybox mode by using console commands.

I feel you man. I’m in the same situation with SP games. 500 hours of DB in 5 months, meanwhile Witcher 3 is gathering dust on the shelf

The same but with 4 months and 540 h

a) You can always try but I doubt you’ll find a game before you get bored of staring at the menu. It used to be populated but had so many flaws that gradually everybody stopped playing it.
b) Supposedly there are more maps coming for every mode, but definitely nothing before 2016.

Now it’s great to see your enthusiasm and I hope it never wavers, but I’m afraid that after a while you’ll start noticing all the little things that are currently very wrong with the game and the initial “spark” of discovering DB will be gone and you’ll join the ranks of us old-timers ranting here and there about the little things. I’m saving you a seat just in case.

I can only disagree with one thing you said: “Great business model”

Aside from that it’s good to see we got another player. Now that Meltdown is over, I need to get back to playing some SP games.

Thanks for answering my questions, I appreciate it! Shame about the state of competitive. Oh well.

CCP115: Well I mean… The business model is fair. More or less anyway. I don’t quite understand why do newbies get gimped characters, I think the two starting mercs should get a full loadout from the getgo, but I’ve certainly seen much worse business models over the years and for the sake of both the company and the players, business model needs to be constructed in such a way that it keeps development going while keeping players engaged. Whether Dirty Bomb does a good job of this… I’ll see I guess.

Lumi: Hehe, we’ll see. Honestly, I don’t expect to play the game for more than 100 hours tops - I’m just not that persistent. But the fact that it keeps me playing in spite of other online games I tried says something all by itself.

Welcome to the community @Fenixp! Glad you’re having a blast. No matter how much complaining I might do on the forums, I love the game - incredible experience and I have faith it’ll keep improving, and hopefully keep giving you reasons to dip back in when other new games tempt you away for a while.
