it seems almost natural for this game to be able to have some sort of sprint and slide feature. perhaps it is something the devs might consider? especially for those who enjoy the sliding around a corner with a shotgun attack.
Player Sprint and Slides
Haha that is what I tried to do from the start! Only to find that hitting crouch while sprinting just caused me to… crouch.
I haven’t played Brink much, but I found myself doing the same for the first few moments; I was too used to the idea of temporarily gaining momentum that way. If you are into it to speed yourself up, consider doing long-wall jumps, they are much trickier, but give you a similar impression.
haha, i must admit it was quite a shock. a guy behind me where i was playing asked what i was doing, sprinting and crouching multiple times. “well i was trying to do a slide” .-. got the oddest look
Sliding makes sense from a control standpoint, but I think it would diminish the gameplay of Dirty Bomb.
For one, maps aren’t designed to make use of the sliding mechanic right now. There are no crawlspaces to slide through, or really any areas in general that would be more easily traversed by sliding. That leaves sliding to be an evasive maneuver.
But do you really want people sliding around a battlefield? I’d argue that jumping is enough to make yourself hard to hit if you’re trying to quickly move between two spaces. Having to deal with people who are able to jump AND slide makes DB a game less about aim and positioning, and turns it into a game about spamming dodges.
Sliding isn’t that effective of an evasive maneuver. unless you’re literally running adjacent to the enemy, if you slide you’d be moving in a straight line toward them, allowing them to tag you multiple times.
You want to be able to shoot while sliding? I think that’s a bit much. There’s already enough mobility in the game and I doubt sliding will add anything much.
I’m all for sliding and i was caught in a similar situation whit the running and crouching thing. I have always been about evasiveness in shooters, the more options the better. having a slide allows for you to trip someone up that wouldn’t other wise pursue you. or gives you another option to avoid sniper choke points. I do find it somewhat strange that there are no crouching elements in any of the maps from Feb beta because what is the point if it isn’t really being used. I could imagine some cool spots in maps where a slide could be very cool to utilize and it can break up the monotony of only running through every doorway. slide doors can put you in a good location but getting out can be a bit tough. these doors can also be covered by an enemy player and a friendly sniper could loan you a motion detector to help with making sure no one is on the other side. Imagine sliding under a door just to find 3 people on the other side, conversely imagine if you were on the other side and 3 people just slide under the door. cool moments like this is what can pull dirty bomb away from the rest of the pack.
Sliding is definitely feasible all around and works quite well in a variety of games, even the latest CoD has it. It doesn’t require any particular map mechanics (although there are a lack of low bridges that even require crouching like in the tutorial, I’ll admit). It works much in the same way jumping does, only in reverse: rather than rushing a person and pointing down while in the air, you point up!
The inherent usefulness of sliding? Good old fashioned FPS jousting. While many thing the end-all, be-all solution to skill is rapidly tapping A and D, or otherwise employing various jumping moves, sliding is another wildcard thrown into the mix. It would be especially useful for those using short-range weapons like shotgun, as that last burst of movement could slip under the horizontal sway of an opposing gunner that has adapted themselves to strafe constantly.
I agree it does seem like this game would have a sprint and slide, or vaulting. It would be a nice fit with jumping off wall thing that got going on there.
as a basis for the post. sliding does come in handy when coming under fire, a good sniper yes can pick you off no matter what evasion you are using, but there are times when it comes to a sliding to buy you a second or two of avoiding an enemy’s sights (similar to the “go prone” before sliding was a concept). yes the maps dont have any points where siding would be “needed”, but the post was made for a(n) idea/concept asking…
Yeah, I have to agree with nial, i prefer this game without sliding it just doesn’t fit.
But I understand where you’re coming from.
