Shmoke and a pancake?

I dont really think that autodownloading maps is going to stop. Most people will make maps with either a small megatexture, or none at all, so the maps won’t be too large.

my video cuts out at “i’m getting a nod from Ke” (33mins 27secs)

is there more? That development Wiki sounds really interesting

I still propose that ID/SD host a map making competition within the first six months after release and bundle them into a community map pack. I’ll gladly download 250MB-1GB of updates out-of-game. 10 maps with custom megatextures are going to have be sent out by DVD booster packs, either that or a FIOS revolution has to happen in my neighborhood.

About Arnout’s accent: it’s funny, because if you pay attention, you’ll see his english IS good, but for some very weird reason, you just can’t understand it well on the video. I guess this is a byproduct of sound compression plus his intonation or something, and maybe because he wasn’t too close to the mic, but most of the times it seemed to me he was talking on some very strange language like german.

And lol at Locki saying “he says he thinks so”.

Yeah, I wanted to hear more about the developement wiki. :bored:

I’m sure a few of the resource sites would be willing to host custom maps, we certainly will

(jjpron) #28

I never liked the autoloading. I don’t know half the maps out there, so I waste my time not knowing what to do.
Community maps would help out casual players like myself.

(Nail) #29

I agree, thinking for our new map vault, having command map/screenshots and objective list available for all maps beside the download link

I was a little worried about custom maps for ET:QW (megatexture file size), but I’m no longer.

In the extreme case (no megatexture) it will be possible to make maps like in W:ET - I wonder how long until first Gold Rush remake shows up.

(Popcorn) #31

Another question for the community. If we decide not to use the new technology are we going to have go back and still learn about shader files or is there a new system?

Mega textures wont be coming onto the smaller maps as far as I can see. The mega texture will only be useful for the huge maps.

I reckon all custom maps will be released with either no megatexture or the very low res version, and later the very most popular customs may have a megatexture update.

TBH ET and RTCW dont have a widespread usage of a large pool of custom maps anyway, the primary problem has been a marketing one and few players will wait the 3 mins for the small files, or have any interest in bothering to see if this custom map is worth getting to know. 60mb files arent going to help this in any way, but neither I think will it make it altogether worse because the primary problem will still be one of getting players to want the maps. A 10mb download of something you dont really want is a nuisance, but everybody is more than happy to download these 300mb videos because expectations are high.

Possibly it will force the issue by making it clear casual downloading is not the way to get a map to succeed, focusing attentions on concerted efforts to get good maps to players.

If the website hosting these maps , addons etc… is:

  • Well designed
  • Intuitive
  • Provides fast downloads
  • Well known

then people will have no problem in downloading custom pak files on their own.

W:ET even had a facility to host custom server files on websites so when you downloaded them you got a full HTTP download speed rather than a limited one
