Pitch Black *screenshots*

(Java.Lang) #1

I want to post some more images of the map Pitch Black in it’s progress. We are quickly approaching a Beta after 9 months of development. Regardless, we have a couple models left to make, and then some custom sounds. Have a look see.

What good would a trainyard be without a train?

The Command Post building.

An escortable boat.

Repair the fuse panel, open them doors…

Inside the Weapons Hold, steal the bomb parts (blue crates)

Drop em off here, at the Loading Bay

Open the crates and start assembling the bomb parts…

An assembled a-bomb.

wow looks nice.

Quite funny how an engineer puts an a-bomb together with just pliers

Nice map though, cool train.

same way the engineer builds a bridge without any lumber. lol

once the crates are dropped, the engineer has to ‘open’ them first, lid comes off and the bomb parts are visible in the crate. sort of a dual construction. the open crates then get built in the 2nd stage to the complete a-bomb.

its a real nice map. Java made it huge, lots of places for people to get lost in, or hide.
nice atmospheric effects also.

I thought there was going to be some sarcastic plain black piccies :stuck_out_tongue:

(G0-Gerbil) #6

Well with my monitor’s crap gamma it’s not far off that

(Java.Lang) #7

The Pitch Black name was derived from the fog atmosphere which effectively makes everything “pitch black”. Anyone familiar with games like Silent Hill, Overblood, Resident Evil know that they make use of a blackening haze on everything in the distance to create an ominous effect. Well it also is used to keep from rendering too much at any time, as is the case in this map too. But the fog I think is blended perfectly now, I have it far enough that you can have great long-distance SMG fights, but not so far that frame-rates suffer.

Does the train move?

(MadMaximus) #9

the idea was to make the train move, but that’s been scrapped for now. but its such a nice looking train model, it seemed a waste to not use it somewhere. the train does do other things that are still being worked on. animated bell, steam exaust, some custom sounds.

there is another contraption that moves on the tracks in an allied/axis tug of war style of thing, i’m just finishing off the model’s for that… and hopefully it will be as silly/fun as we thought it would be in-game.

(Schaffer) #10

Hey Max, when are you doing more work on Airfield Assult?

(MadMaximus) #11

im working on getting the beta out soon, did a lot of ajustments and have added some more stuff to the town area as well as other places, and am also in the process of changing the season from winter to spring or summer to see how it looks. its been a long time now since i had the fp out, and hopefully will be closing on getting the beta and eventually the final out. i’ll let you know by e-mail when i’ll be close to the finish on the beta so you can do the cm.

i hooked up with lang and its been a good working relationship, i do some stuff for Java’s PitchBlack map such as modelling and scripting and he does some misc. artwork i need for air assault. he’s an excellent artist.

soon Schaffer, soon… lol… ive been saying that for a while, but i really want to make shure i cover all ends in the map… i don’t want to release beta1, beta2 and so on… hopefully just a beta, and minor repairs to the final. i know i said id never map again after it was done, but now i can’t wait til it’s over so i can do some other idea’s that ive been mulling on.

(Schaffer) #12

No Probs Max. Sorry to divert the attention from Pitch Black. BTW It looks cool. I like trains (but I’m not a freak) so I would like to see it a close up with a bit more light (looks pretty black). Is it modeld on anything because it sort of looks like one of the Wild West style trains except without the big funnel.

When ever your ready for Air Field is cool. Let me know if it is one or two CM’s.

(Java.Lang) #13

It was modeled after a German engine that was predominant around 1880-1910a or so, but still in use during WW2. It does however, look much brighter in game.

We have plans to incoporate a few more train models, or cars in the map before the final is released.

As of now, and as MM hinted, we are focusing on the main escort model. I don’t want to ruin the surprise, because we are attempting to do something ridiculous, and you’ll have to see it to believe it. However, if you want to find out on your own, there is more information available (and more screens) at our Community website.

More screenshots will be posted after the next compile.

(Genesis) #14

It looks great… like the 2nd screenies touch 2 it…
though it all the space going 2 b used or is it just a waste of time trying 2 find out whats there because there is nothing…

It does look very promising!

(Schaffer) #15

NP JL. Will have a look at the site later

(eRRoLfLyNN) #16

Looks real niiiiice  Must play soon. But the size of it looks like a map that would kill my ancient 500mhz PC :frowning:

(Schaffer) #17

500mhz? I cant even really play ET prperly on my daughters machine and thats a Celeron 800 with 256Mb and Geforece 2 MX. Not a bad PC for a 4 your old but crap for 3d games

(Genesis) #18

lol… the pc im @ atm is a 450mhz + ATI Rage 128 Xpert
ET doesnt run here btw…
The PC i play ET is a 850mhz + GF4 MX and i get a usual 40 fps…
oops im going off-topic
anywayz i do get a higher fps on most of the custom maps… so i stopted worrying about my fps on maps anymore…

(=DaRk=CrAzY-NuTTeR) #19

it would look even better if u used some foliage to make water splashes appear on the water

(MadMaximus) #20

there are water splashes ( circles ) on the water, it’s hard to see in the screens, but very clear in-game
