PING

(Wolf_Darkrose) #1

So stupid question but how does your ping effect in game? I know odd question but I’ve seen people with ping hitting 400 and there in game player responds and reacts like normal and other glitching across the map badly. I remember in late closed beta high ping would get you killed fast. Now i don’t know anyone ??

There is partial client side detection being used. So if your PC registers a hit, it sends the information back to the server and the hit happens.

There is no latency in your shots/bullets only latency in regards to player locations.
Say you have 400 ping, someone might come around the corner and kill you on your screen before you even have time to react. It might look like you’ve shot him a couple of times on your end, but the server has already registered you as dead, so your damage wouldn’t count in that case.

Its not a perfect system, but its still one of the best systems I’ve seen so far and prefer it to a lot of other methods.

Granted that player should be playing in a place where he pings better, servers should have some sort of auto kick for too high of a ping. (except in private servers as you might really want to play a game with say… a cousin half way around the world, and you should be able to)

ahhh ok… always did seem odd that high ping players would kill me around corners or heal teammates from around a wall on my screen.

i’m frm Asia and has 50ms on Asian servers . On US-East i have around 280ms . And i have to say i haven’t noticed any big changes .
But 400ms is outright laggathon , " Its gives you Wings "

well im usa west so there most likely in the middle east… but ya was funy watching him ping around the place because no one could keep any eye on him not even his teammates lol.

It can effect certain merc abilities, specifically Nader and Fletcher. It’s almost down right impossible to lead your targets with anything above 100-200 ping.

Wall jumping gets real sketchy at higher pings too. Mostly I’ve found that 150 and below results in mostly normal play for myself and everyone else. You start to run into issues the higher it gets from 150 though and it gets especailly worse if your ping is rubber banding up and down (going from 100 to 250) or if you’re dropping packets. The latter two things is what causes issues for not only yourself but everyone on the server. Which is why you always hear people incorrectly attribute high ping to messing up everyone’s game when in reality the high ping doesn’t matter a whole lot as long as it’s consistent. It’s only the rubber banding and packet loss that screws with everyone involved.

ya was in a match not 5 minutes ago and 180… and it keep jumpin but some how no one could kill her but she was killing us… hmm ping seems like an advantage .

It’s not. They have a disadvantage (which have been listed in this thread) even with everything being smooth. Just because somebody with a high ping can kill you doesn’t mean that high ping = advantage. That’s just an odd viewpoint to take. There are disadvantages to a high ping when you’re playing but people shooting you have no issues shooting you unless you are having the two issues I described in my previous post. And that will be an issue for the player and the people trying to shoot them as well and it helps nobody.

Basically, it’d be the best for everyone if everyone had the lowest ping possible.

(SnakekillerX) #11

Well yes and no, if you ping really bad, or even have packet loss you could teleport so severely that other people wouldn’t be able to shoot you properly, yet you’d still be able to hit them.

It can be an advantage in that way, even if it just makes people waste ammo on you and disorients them, also you might have multiple people shooting at you, some teleporting, and others not which can get a bit disorienting at times.

If there is no teleporting going on though (packet loss) then high ping is just a disadvantage really.

Also, I personally can’t stand playing with anything over 80~90 ping.

WoW those low ping standards. How you going to impress the servers that way. lol. My beef is after they hit 150 ping then it jumps all the time to 200 to even 300

(BananaSlug) #13

i am from EU and i am fine when my ping is under 85… but my internet dosent give a shit about that

That’s why I specifically talked about rubberbanding and packet loss in my previous post (which I mentioned in the post you quoted). A high ping that is consistent causes no warping/teleporting/rubberbanding typically as long as it’s within reason. You can have a 350 ping that is constant 350 with no PL and it won’t be pleasant for you to play on due to ping dependency issues but people will have no issues shooting you. It’s when you get somebody who has 150 ping then 300 then 700 back down to 100 and/or they have massive packet loss is when things become frustrating for everyone. And I wouldn’t consider that an advantage unless you consider cannon fodder that can’t hit anything an advantage.

(Black) #15

Thank you for clearly this up because alot of people seem to believe that a high ping will result in bad or laggy gameplay which completely untrue.

It’s the inconsistency. Me jumping from 10ms to 80ms is not going to be enjoyable for me simply because it’s low.
I’ve seen players who are 250+ ping destroy others with 50- ping.

(Amerika) #16

Yup. going from a 10-80 ping will cause crazy warping/rubberbanding just like having a 50ms ping with 7% packet loss will also cause you to teleport.

But people who claim that high ping gives players an advantage are just being kind of silly.
