Ping in Competitive

Why do I consistently get 180 ping in matchmaking games? I live in SF, so max ping to any north american server should be around 90~ (for East Coast). Is this due to server lag? It can’t be just my internet, because many of my friends, who live in the same general region, when queueing with me, have the same problems, and other people in my games consistently get the same ping and are from similar areas as well.

Is this a direct result of the influx of new players?

I can’t speak for your area, but as far as ping goes, I’m still getting the same pings since the open beta started. If others in your area are having the same problem it might indicate a temporary problem in your area. Are all the people you know of that are having issues using the same provider?

There is an issue of not putting you on a local server at the moment, so it’s not that you are pinging badly to a local server, just that you are pinging averagely to a server on the other side of the world.

I select to queue for north america and hence I should. Is it because of a lack of available servers or because the game just doesn’t seem to find a server with good ping?

You’re right it should, I think the answer is both, but mostly due to the bug that it doesn’t find the correct server.
