Picking a Merc for slow, deliberate, strategic & tactical playstyle

After spending the best 30k Credits I’ve ever spent on Sawbonez the Medic, getting a Steam code for Fragger, and getting damn good loadouts and practicing my ass off with both of them, I’ve decided I want to finally round out my Squad. I want to get my three set in stone and actually start working on tactics and high-level strategy. I’d like to hear your opinions on the Mercs in light of what I’m looking for.

In games, as in all things, I tend to take things at a slower pace, thinking my actions through for at least a few seconds ahead of time before committing to the one rational solution I’ve arrived at. There may be many ways to skin a cat, but depending on the current tactical situation (and the ones most likely to occur ten or twenty or even thirty seconds from now), only one is the true and logical way to proceed. Every action I take must have some consequence or it is a waste of time and resources, may as well be helping the enemy at this rate. Unconventional or unusual tactics are a plus for me, but it is secondary to actually getting the job done.

I’ve narrowed it to three Mercs, though I’m still all ears for the rest of them.

  • Rhino. Slow, deliberate, can take a beating. Minigun, shotty, and a surprisingly accurate pistol made for a staggering array of tools at my disposal during my Free Rotation testing. Effective positioning relative to everyone else on the server and the objective a must, and a fun challenge to sort out. Everyone always seems to magnetically gravitate their crosshairs to me whenever I approach as Rhino, however.
  • Bushwhacker. The placement of turrets and covering fire is a risky and rewarding game of tower defense that can also prove a formidable offensive. Being an Engie also means I can play the objective if my team requires me to.
  • Vassili. Yes, the pressure’s on in a firefight, but picking targets to snipe is a decision requiring foresight and strategic thinking. I could also use any excuse to work on my aim. Redeye beckons though. I’ve yet to have the opportunity to test drive either of them.

Rhino: they are decent a close quarter, just avoid open spaces. the reason it feels like the crosshairs graviate to you, is because you are so slow, enemies can get headstots on you more easily, and because rhinos are pretty powerfull, players usually choose to kill rhino first and the rest of the mercs later.

Bushwhacker: the turret is great. use it at places so that you can fire at the enemy at 2 places, or let it defend your back while you are repairing/placing bomb, or let it defend a important objective on its own (which gives you more kills than you would first expect) Being engi in general just makes you great asset to the team.

Vassili: I never played vassili so i cant tell you much about them.

You already have best medic in bonz, best pure killer in fragger, so now you need the best engy, i know its debatable but I think it’s BL33 Fletcher!

BL33 Fletcher, eh? Do explain.

You have Fragger for offense and Sawbonez as arguably the best combat medic, though my Aura play could give you a run for your money. I would pick an objectivist to round out the crew giving you the flexibility to play all roles.

I’ve personally got Aura, Bushwhacker, and Nader as my loadout. I keep Proxy current though as a switch hitter depending on maps.

I’ll use Sparks, Fletcher/Bushwhacker, or Rhino/Skyhammer, depending on the situation. I only use Skyhammer when I need to take out heaps of players with the air strike, destroying the ev, OR throwing out ammo packs in the last 10 seconds to get a high score…

Slow and thoughtful approach means Vassilli. Redeye would be a nice alternative.

Bushwhacker’s turret is pretty meh and Rhino needs a medic behind him and then just shoots everything in sight.

Slow? That’s something I usually don’t hear. Anyone really needs a tactical approach to use. The slowest mercs on the roster are rhino and fragger. I guess fragger is more of this play style because it depends on timing your grenades right to eliminate opponents. Rhino is more on knowing or guessing where the enemies are coming from and doing crowd control on them.

You decide. Play Dirty, guys.

Stop necroing threads.

Maybe Arty? He#s meant for mid-long range, has a nice ability if you learn to use it and provides allies and yourself with unlimited ammo. He has a very high skill ceiling and isn’t as good in rushing or as adaptable to the situation as Skyhammer for example. But if you know your spots, get used to his “a few meters away from the frontline” and “thoughtful” play style he can be awesome. Most of the times my go-to supporter.

Edit: Oh, I’m just looking at the “recent discussions” page and don’t look if it was necro’ed or not ^^
