Phantom's second skill

(grandAnemone) #1

I thought about it and I think that this ability would work the name of it is :Decoy.
How it would work :
Upon activation phantom creates a decoy at where he is standing the decoy will then move around and attack people but deal no dmg if the decoy is hit by any form of dmg the decoy would explode and reveal nearby enemies at the decoy and deal a little amount of dmg to enemies around it

(grandAnemone) #2

Well these are my thoughts so do give some ideas !

(MrLashnibro) #3

Well why not disguise like spy in TF2? Or a electrical detector that will detect electronics like turrets, mines, C4s etc

(awesomePenguin) #4

It sounds like the similar ability in Halo: Reach which eventually no one used because it was easily discerned.

(Hexwall) #5

I think you were thinking bout Zero from Borderlands

(grandAnemone) #6

Yeah that idea would work too

(Naonna) #7

If people are complaining about his current very-visible cloak, do you think they’ll be happy with having to pick him out of their own team? - Yes there are sound files for it and yes, it worked in tf2. I get the feeling the rage would be too much to handle. (Also, As everyone’s noted recently, he needs an ability either to kill enemies, spot enemies, or help out his team in some way, being a recon and not an assault)

Lunge - lunge with the secondary attack, still needs a tiny bit better melee hibox for that. (to help him utilize his strong melee)

Throwing knives - something that SD doesn’t want to add, low damage ability, projectile speed/distance/hitbox would be about the same as for the nade launcher projectiles.

1st option: 3-5 charges with roughly the same cooldown as nade launcher that will only deal damage. (to quickly help him finish his target after stabbing without switching weapons)

2nd option: maybe 1 charge with a really low cooldown, but in addition to damage it will mark the target(a spotting ability, something which SD doesn’t want to give to Phantom as well). (to give him some utility)

3rd option: 1 charge with a low cooldown that won’t deal damage(also not revealing the direction it was hit from), but marking the target and also increasing damage taken by the target by X%. [to mark key targets to either assassinate with extra damage or mark them for your team to take out(vassili/rhino camping location witout giving away your own position)]

4th option: 1 charge with a low cooldown that will deal damage and increase damage taken by the target by X%. (to give him personal assassination power)

Personal heat sensor? - an ability to see enemies through walls within a certain range. (to help him do his flanks without running blindly into danger and fulfill his role as an assassin by picking the best position possible and pick off enemies alone)

In my opinion, as SD doesn’t want Phantom to be a team player like other recon mercs, he should be more of a mix between recon and assault, I mean, he is rather average if not even below average as of now. If he can’t help the team, he should be scary in a 1v1 like Fragger who has great guns and lots of health with an extremely strong damage ability.
An assassin in games usually has high damage, but bad defense and to make up for the bad defense they usually have some kind of stealth ability, now, Phantom: no extra damage, just a stronger melee weapon, bad health compared to rest of the mercs and his stealth isn’t all that stealthy if you can see him and he leaves his playlist playing on his iphone loud while he’s running around cloaked.
He already has plenty of counterplay, make the cloaking silent, either give him extra 10 hp or make his cloak absorb more damage and let the damage absorption persist for a full 1 second or so after the invisibility wears off. He really doesn’t have any offense or defense to really make him stand out, so he’s just overshadowed by most mercs as they at least got a damage ability or some utility ability that could benefit the team.

A decoy could be cool, but I’d have it so that it can’t die until it runs out, then just fades away. Then people shoot at it and don’t realise it’s a decoy immediately, giving phantom more time to do whatever.

If Phantom can’t get a spotting ability, then give him the Personal Holo-Decoy from BLR.
Quote from the wiki “when used it displays a virtual player image that will run forward in a straight line for several meters.”[/left]

(Naonna) #11

Not sure how convincing it would be when it just runs into a wall. - otherwise it would only be useful on long straight corridors.

(MvMArcher) #12

Anyway that makes the enemy look the other way is very useful, it’ll give phantom a way to “force” the enemy to look where he wants them too.

(darlingClaymore) #13

Yes, this would work. He is a phantom, aka a dead person so he uses a mirror image to distract?

(grandAnemone) #14

Maybe when Phantom activates the skill a hologram is placed at his position, a hologram that stands still and when people attack it, it blinds the attacker and the decoy disappears while revealing the blinded person in the process.

(watsyurdeal) #15

Has anyone here ever heard of a Scrambler?

Imagine a Motion Sensor for Vasilli, but instead produces fake spotted enemies to draw in people, this is perfect for Phantom because it allows him to misdirect people, playing into the Recon role, and use his cloak to pick off people he lures away from their team.

(deviousOrangutan) #16

His invis still needs work

(deviousOrangutan) #17

so maybe they should work on thar first

(grandAnemone) #18

They should just change back the invis to the completely invisible phantom it’s quite easy to spot him when he’s running towards you

(Rawr) #19

Interesting little tidbit:
If you listen to the sound files on YouTube, the mercs seem to have quotes such as “enemy is disguised as…me?”. This seems to suggest that this was gonna be the ability of one of the mercs (likely Phantom), or an entirely new merc. Here’s a link to the video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w37wf-OcGP4

As cool as the idea is, it doesn’t especially help out the team. - The current issue is balancing phantom’s visibility, speed, and noise so that he can be countered if he’s reckless or is used too aggressively. The other issue involved is that he has no spotter/ability that benefits his teammates: he’s a bit of a selfish merc and acts like a fragging class who can move on his own and fight 1v1 fights as of now. He does alright at it, but most other classes can do the job better. Without a clear purpose, people have complained about him for different reasons. Some argue he should be a melee class (which the devs disapprove of) with others pointing out that his stealth is a bit… un-stealthy in its current form. Many people want him to help his team: not just be a fragging class: that way, he could still be of benefit - similar to a sniper role by picking off key targets: not fighting the entire enemy team one on one. My personal issue starts with his cloak and speed - while moving, he’s kinda screwed due to the drop of his cloak’s effectiveness. Second comes his team play options. - Let’s fix what can be fixed FIRST and then build on him. It’s really up to the devs if they want to make him more fraggy or more stealthy and specialized. - Just my understanding. People ask for a second ability to make him team-friendly and less selfish.
