Phantom's EMP.

I know a lot of people bring up how his EMP field gives him away, and have requested moving his ability to an EMP grenade instead… but what if he had both?

His cloak will still have the EMP effect, but he would have a second ability which is a Cloaked EMP Grenade. It would also emit the cloaked whirring noise. What this does is confuse the enemy players as they no longer know if there is a phantom cloaked near by, or if the Phantom used a cloaked EMP nade to act as a decoy.

You could of course also use it to nade EMP things that are out of your reach as is what some people have expressed wanting.

The Cloaked EMP Grenade would have a similar cool down to Phantom’s cloak, but would not be able to be deactivated remotely. Phantom would still be able to pick it up before it expires (to restore some of the cool down time) and the enemy can still destroy it with either a lucky stray bullet, or with splash damage from explosives.

Just wondering what people would thing about something like this.

That… Actually sounds like a great idea. Phantom could definitely use something like that to give him more depth.

Never thought of that. If anybody could use an audio decoy, it’s Phantom. Nice idea!

That was my concern as well regarding spotting, it would give you away.

Another thought I had about Phantom some months back would be something like “Assassinate Target” which would be a single target spot ability that Phantom would mark.

This spot would operate differently as it would be silent to the player it detects (they wouldn’t know). The spot icon would also look different than other spots so that you would know it was a Phantom spot.

This could be used to either to help the team focus their effort on a single target for quick death, or depending on your communication ways to inform where an enemy healer, or medic is.

I also get a vision of Phantom pointing at someone and then motioning with his thumb across his neck when he activates this ability.

Well another possibility is a spotting field on top of his EMP. But, it only applies to whatever he disables. So if he disables a proxy mine, it’s position on the HUD will be displayed so your team knows it is there.

Yeah, that sounds pretty cool, it would highlight enemy deployables, so he is actually considered recon at that point.

Wonder how much garbage that might cause on screen though when you spot deployables and someone else spots players at the same time. I’d be interested to see it.

Think I would just prefer the EMP to be a throwable and have the cloak retain invisibility and armor.

Also, the activation for the armor portion should be much faster so Phantom can actually use it to tank explosives in a pinch.

Having Phatom using his EMP and Cloak at the same while needing him to disable devices and suprise opponents is like you either just stand doing “nothing” or “triggering” your cloak/EMP cooldown to kill 1 or 2 enemies while not EMP:ing the devices.

The idea is cool but having the cloak and EMP at the same time without your own will depending on situation is stupid. Ofcourse there are situation when its good to stay hidden while EMP:ing.

Would be better imo. to separate them.
Making it if you use only cloak or EMP it would consume less energy, and when using cloak without EMP the cloak would be quieter and not so visible.

I think EMP grenade should be saved to some other cool merc, it’s a good idea. Phantom is just fine, or needs a slight buff. Maybe make him more transparent and silent.

They say TF2 Spy is only good, when enemy team is unaware. But that’s not the case in comp. Thus anything Spy can do, Sniper does better.

Perhaps the whole stealth concept was doomed from the start?
I know I compare different game, with rock-paper-scissors mechanic. But supposedly if Phantom’s cloak acted like TF2’s Spy (Ghost only, no interaction, 100% invisibility), then would it offer better utility than Sniper’s?

@TheStrangerous Phantoms cloak needs a buff imo. Against experienced players its almost useless, unless you are crouching still “but” they can still hear you and in some situations see you right away even tho you are not doing anything.

As a player who mained Phatom alot in casual and in competetive, i have experienced alot of these situations where you are crouching and they just instantly start shooting at you.

“A merc with cloak ability” Haha, it barely even works as a cloak, plus it has EMP so it gives you away even better.

Yeah, I’d probably reduce the sound when crouching and not moving to almost nothing.

Stealth is great, it just needs to be reworked a bit.

EMP grenade would be Phantom’s saving grace, in case cloak fails.

Reworking existing mercs beats adding new ones.
